Review of Surviving the Business of Healthcare
As most people would agree, dealing with physical ailments is difficult enough in itself without the added stress of making appropriate and fruitful healthcare decisions. Barbara Galutia Regis PA-C has attempted to simplify this process for us, along with sharing her life experience through her book, Surviving the Business of Healthcare. As a medical professional and primary care provider, Regis says she loves her job because she gets to care for her patients from cradle to grave. She has attempted to do the same with this book by providing necessary and helpful details concerning the technicalities of healthcare. She includes her actual patient-doctor interaction details as well as stories from her childhood, life, etc. She talks about her ancestry and her patient-doctor relationships which show how much she cares about the well-being of those in her care.
The most important thing about this book is that it will be one of the most useful books in your library. Regis gives practical and to-the-point advice on matters such as hospital admissions, emergency plans, health insurance, etc. She mentions step-by-step procedures to follow so that her readers are saved from unnecessary expenditure or annoyance. She is a cancer patient and therefore, speaks from both the caretaker's and the patient's point of view. Her writing is influential and her struggles can be felt and understood through her impactful words.
Medical terms can often be confusing and scary for ordinary people, and so Regis has used layman's terms to explain as much as she could in her book. This book will be incredibly helpful in understanding what your doctors and caretakers mean. Regis's father and grandfather were both in the medical industry as well and hence she holds her profession dear to her heart, which can be seen in her writing. She includes a comparison of small-town healthcare and today's big healthcare businesses as well, including the cost and service factors. She stresses the importance of health insurance and living wills in her book. This book can also prove incredibly useful to anyone looking to get into the health sector as it also mentions a thorough list of various occupations in the healthcare industry.
I could not find any cons to the book. It is detailed, educational, emotional, easy to understand, and is a light read as well. Regis has done a commendable job with this book and it also seems to have been thoroughly edited, as I found no errors in this book.
I gladly give this book 5 out of 5 stars as it has everything a patient could ask for to make them feel confident and trusting of the U.S. healthcare industry. Regis's fight with cancer and her life story are inspiring and wholesome while being incredibly emotional as well. I would recommend this book to every adult or young adult in the USA looking to gain knowledge of the medical system and all aspiring medical professionals as well. In a world of business-minded individuals, Regis has shown how a job is done while wanting the best for her patients. This book is educational, insightful, comprehensive, and inspiring all in one.
