Dr. Ghoulem Berrah's autobiography, A Dream For Peace, details his life. He was born during the colonial era in Aïn Beïda, Constantine, Algeria. When his father passed away, he was still quite young. He was the only son and was raised by his mother. During the time of French colonialism, Dr. Berrah was born to a Muslim family. He began opposing colonialism at a very early age. When he was a medical student in France, his political activism increased, and he joined numerous organizations at his university to oppose colonialism and fight for Algeria’s independence. Despite being put in prison for standing up for justice, he continued to work for the peace of his nation. He pursued his education until he graduated with a medical degree. Additionally, he is a doctor, scientist, advocate for freedom, advocate for peace, and social activist. The author also mentions that he was the first scientist to propose a theory regarding “reverse transcriptase.”

The author's writing and narration style were among the factors that made this book a pleasure to read. I stayed interested in this book until the very end because it is full of interesting events. I was astounded at how Dr. Ghoulem Berrah managed to maintain balance in his life around the themes mentioned. He temporarily put an end to the political revolution to pursue science in the United States of America. I really appreciated how the author was able to express his thoughts on various life issues in the book while also being honest about his feelings. He discusses with readers his career as a diplomat and the difficulties he overcame along the way. On the various powerful figures he interacted with, he offers his unvarnished opinions.

There was nothing that I disliked about the book. The book was intriguing and well-written. Although it was too long, that did not deter me from reading it. My ability to understand and appreciate this wonderful memoir was unaffected. The book was enjoyable to read because it taught me more about the past of some nations, like Algeria. I like how the pictures are scattered throughout the book in thoughtful locations. It gave the book color and strengthened the author's narratives. In fact, this memoir was interesting to read.

The book was insightful and inspiring, which is why I liked it. I was greatly motivated by the author's selfless outlook, tenacity, and fighting spirit. It is truly wonderful how many challenges Dr. Ghoulem Berrah overcame in his lifetime. He fought for both peace and anything deserving of praise. There were no grammatical errors or mistakes in it; therefore, it was professionally edited. As a result, I am rating this book 4 out of 4 stars.

I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in colonialism, African history, or politics.
