The hard road to great leadership inevitably shapes great leaders. The book  A Dream for Peace presents the memoirs of its author, Dr. Ghoulem Berrah, in which he describes most of his life, from childhood to the time of his withdrawal from the world of diplomacy. Although Algerian by birth, the author placed himself in the service of another African country, the Ivory Coast. Equally unusual is his determination to replace his vocation, medicine and science, with the world of high politics and diplomacy. This book starts off with a prologue written by the now deceased Titular Archbishop of Bolsena and a tribute paid to the author.

Dr. Ghoulem Berrah was born in Aïn Beïda, a small town in the province of Constantine, in northeastern Algeria, during the French colonial era. As a child, he was raised by a stay-at-home mother and a jeweler father. Having studied medicine at a French medical school, Ghoulem Berrah became a peace activist, co-founder of the Association of North African Muslim Students, and a member of the Algerian revolution. However, this was just the beginning of his amazing journey.

During his time as a peace steward, Dr. Berrah inspired many men to work hard, so that they would reach their full potential. His goal was to promote peace between people of different faiths and beliefs. Furthermore, Dr. Berrah participated in several groups for peacemaking and the pursuit of Afro-Arab harmony. With his sincerity, noble character, and witty sense of humor, he was easy to befriend. A common interest in seeing Algeria free brought him together with people who shared his goal. The fact that he persisted in marrying his wife, Titi, despite all the drama in his family is admirable. Among the different religions, Dr. Berrah believed that there should be unity. He believed that irrespective of one’s religion, there could be peace and harmony if each religious body learned to tolerate the other. As a Muslim, he married a Christian and lived happily with her for over 25 years. Ghoulem was a gifted man with many talents: a doctor, a peace seeker, a revolutionary ambassador, and a freedom fighter. What I love most about this book is Ghoulem's selflessness and determination to bring about a revolution. Even being imprisoned and tortured didn't weaken his spirit; instead, it made him strive more.

My favorite part of this book is Ghoulem's selfless commitment to revolutionizing the world. In each chapter of the book, the author takes the reader on a journey to find change. As a result of reading this book, readers will gain a better understanding of the aftermath of colonialism and how Africa suffered. Through Ghoulem's eyes, we see the history of the twentieth century. Even though the author gave a lengthy account of his life, his creative writing made the story intriguing and educational. Additionally, the pictures used in some chapters of this book gave me clarity about some obscure thoughts I had about it. The inspirational quotes at the end of each chapter make the book a worthwhile read.

There are no negative aspects to the book. One cannot find any aspect of the book that is not interesting. The book is properly dated and professionally edited, making it easier to read. However, it is a very long book with close to 600 pages, but that is to be expected considering how adventurous Dr. Ghoulem Berrah's life was. Details and "behind the scenes" are very well written, enhancing this book even further. There are a lot of photos to illustrate the events, which makes the book more interesting.

With all the above in mind, deciding how to rate A Dream for Peace  was easy. I rate the book four out of four stars . I found no errors in the book. The diction is clear and easy to comprehend. The book itself is very well edited and provides readers with an abundance of information, from the perspective of a diplomat, during a critical period in the development of society.

It would appeal to all readers interested in the period of decolonization of Africa, to all lovers of politics, diplomacy, and history, as well as to all readers who simply appreciate well-written books. This makes the reader want to learn more about the events. It does not contain any strong sexual events, so it would be suitable for anyone interested in history.
