A Dream For Peace is a memoir by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah, a visionary with a better and higher hope for the African nation. Dr. Berrah was born in Aïn Beïda, a small town in the northeastern part of Algeria. While growing up, Berrah’s education constantly revolved around France, its origin, history, and geography. He never learned anything about his Algerian heritage, which made him feel like a second-class citizen, causing him to resent the French system right from his youthful days. After graduating from high school, Berrah gained admission to study medicine at a university in Bordeaux, France. After spending a few years at the university, Berrah met several other students from North Africa and the Sub-Saharan French Colonies. Berrah and the other students later formed the Association of North African Muslim Students (AEMNA). For Berrah, juggling his medical studies with his student union activities was not an easy task. His quest for freedom was what kept driving him, and it gave him a sense of purpose. Sensing his involvement in the anti-colonial movement, the French anti-terrorist squad soon tagged Berrah as a terrorist, and his activities became closely monitored by the French police. In 1954, Berrah received news about his sick mother, and he had to travel back to Algeria to be by her bedside. A few days after arriving in Aïn Beïda, Berrah lost his mother, and he counted himself lucky enough to have been able to spend time with her in her last days. After his mother’s burial, Berrah returned to Bordeaux and became more involved in political activities.

A Dream For Peace is a well-written novel that captures many emotions, depicting both the pleasant and unpleasant sides of life as experienced by a freedom fighter and a peace seeker. Berrah faced many trials and tribulations while seeking peace across the African continent. Thankfully, he never gave up, and his legacy still lives on. He dedicated his life and work to the unity and peace of the entire African continent. I particularly loved the author’s persevering spirit, his unwavering support and dedication to Africa, and his commitment to diplomacy. Berrrah often demonstrates his creativity by always seeking peace among his brethren. Berrah’s vision for a peaceful world helped him resolve many issues that would have led to war through dialogue. Berrah is a fascinating storyteller, and by reading this book, I learned many things about the history of Africa before and after colonization. Berrah contributed immensely to Africa’s rich history, and his legacy lives on. It saddened my heart when I learned he passed away a few years ago. Dr. Berrah was indeed a true peace seeker and will be missed by many in Africa and the world. Berrah’s wisdom was equal to none, and his ability to interact with several leaders proved him a great ambassador. He also constantly challenged corrupt systems and remained incorruptible.

I have absolutely nothing to dislike about this book. The author did an excellent job of putting together a compelling story that was inspiring and educating. The author also followed a chronological structure in telling his story, which made it very captivating and easy to follow and understand. I never got tired of reading this book, even though it was extensive and voluminous.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book deserves a perfect rating because it was exceptionally well edited. The author did an excellent job of putting together such a marvelous and impactful story that would indeed change many lives. Furthermore, the story is educative, with several moral lessons for readers to enjoy. I also appreciated that the author included several pictures and documents that detailed many of his experiences without going overboard.

I recommend this book to lovers of history. Also, anyone who loves politics will be motivated by this great book. This book is engaging and a must-read for those who would love to make a change in the world.
