In A Dream For Peace, Dr Ghoulem Berrah narrates his life’s account as a son, husband, father, doctor, scientist, ambassador, political activist and an advocate for Algeria’s independence from French colonization.

Growing up, Berrah was unique among his peers. He was observant and intelligent and possessed a burning passion to behold one day an independent Algeria. After the death of his father, Berrah was raised by his loving mother and developed an inseparable bond with her; she was an interesting and competent woman, a woman of significance, well-known in the community even among men. With the care which only a mother can give she groomed her only son and proved to be of constant support to him. Berrah, however, was a bright student, winning many awards. After primary school, he got admitted into the university to study medicine determined to make his mother proud by performing well in his studies, but tragedy struck when Berrah's mother passed away. The news of his mother's death came as a shock to him, she was always so strong and Berrah never expected she would leave so soon. Her demise was greatly felt, and Berrah for a moment grieved that his mom will never be able to make it to his graduation but that didn’t discourage him, from organizing students, meeting with great men, and serving the cause of Africa, Ghoulem Berrah started a lifelong advocacy for the largest country in Africa: Algeria. Read this book to grab the true-life history of a lifelong Algeria independence advocate: Ghoulem Berrah.

The memoir I would confidently say is easy to understand. The book structure is well-developed and written in a simple comprehensive pattern. The author did a great work in weaving his life account in such a discreet pattern even emphasizing little details that others may have overlooked but he saw it fit to enclose in this book to enable his readers to understand better. What stood out for me was Berrah's sense of confidence even as a little child. Berrah recounts how he stood up to his principal in primary school when the principal accused the Arabs of going contrary to the school’s law against putting logs into the school burning system during recess. Although Berrah was right, this act of his earned him a three-day suspension; it was at this point I believed ignited the fires of advocacy in Ghoulem Berrah. I am impressed with the author's vivid narration of events and how they relate to life situations, a story that I found quite amazing Berrah was able to achieve a lot which included becoming the closet counsellor of President Félix Houphoüet- Boigny and serving as a peace ambassador between Israel and Palestine among many others.

There are no negative aspects to this book, apart from the fact that I did find the text of it to be of a massive length. If this book is ever considered to be re-edited, I humbly suggest the book's length is reduced to provide a shorter but well precise reading experience. Nevertheless, I did find this book to be engaging, detailed and error-free.

Certain attributes portrayed by Berrah are worth emulating and as he demonstrated, we should always stand for what is right despite who or what we stand up against until our views are taken into consideration. Also, no matter what setbacks we face or what failures we encounter, we should like Berrah when he was arrested in Spain for his political activism always get back on our feet stronger, better and more strategically. Therefore, I am giving this book a rating of four out of four stars.

I recommend this book to the general audience especially students and individuals interested in Algeria and Africa history as they will learn to learn a lot from reading this book.
