Hard Knocks: Memoir of a Small Moment by Ray Lopez is a book based in the 60’s and 70’ about a man, Ray, who lives through the life of hard knocks, but comes to know God. He grew up in a faith based family and was your typical rebellious kid. He is a clear casualty of addiction, but overcomes and finds himself through faith.

The detail of his account through this time in his life is very in depth. His word choices were well-chosen and you could nearly feel what he felt. All of the events were laid out in order throughout his life. His toughness was my biggest surprise in this book. Specifically, how he constantly bounced back from beatings. And the fact the the author is also the main character of the book gives it the best perspective as a reader.

I have lived through troubled teen years and thought by myself lucky to come out the way I did. However, Ray brings new light to what it truly means to come out of the darkness. The way the Bible versus were quoted throughout the book really had me clinging on to see what was next. And the placement of these versus were right on with each chapter.

My favorite thing about this book are the Bible Versus and the photos he’s included. It gives faces to the names in each story. And seeing his parents helped me to live through this experience with him.

The only dislike I have about this book is that, at times, it was very hard to hold on and keep reading. I often felt like it was being “over done” and in a manner that seemed a little far fetched. However, I did finish it and I’m glad that I did!

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. It was professionally edited. It’s very honest and straightforward. Other parents could learn a lot from his mother by reading this memoir.
