In his diligently written memoir, A Dream For Peace, Dr. Ghoulem Berrah allows readers to walk away with some form of inspiration. He narrates his and other people’s struggles in the quest to rescue his country from oppression, racism, and colonialism. Being part of the movement that fought for independence in Algeria, the author gives firsthand information about the Algerian Independence Movement. He also talks about his personal life.

Growing up in Algeria during the colonial period, Dr. Berrah could not help but notice the injustices that his people were experiencing under the hands of their colonizers; this motivated him to become an activist. Since he was an extraordinary student, Dr. Berrah received a French medical scholarship. While in university, he joined with other like-minded individuals from Algeria and other parts of Africa in a movement that championed the liberation of Algeria and some other African nations from colonial hands. Many difficulties marked this path, but he was relentless and refused to give up. Curious? Take a read and feed your curiosity.

Family plays a huge role in our lives. Our beliefs about life can be oppugned or reiterated as we journey through life. In this memoir, we get a glimpse of the roles played by the family in the growth of an individual. The author talked about how his family was important in his journey. His father passed away, forcing him to grow up in a single-parent family. He had an excellent relationship with his mother. The author painted a vivid picture with words of how loving, caring, and supportive his mother was. Coming from a Muslim family, he was not allowed to marry a Christian, but he went against those beliefs and married a Christian, causing strong opposition from his family. I loved the incorporation of the theme of family in this book. This memoir also had other themes, i.e., love, race, politics, and religion.

Undoubtedly, the author was so descriptive, and his talent with words lighted up images in my mind that were vivid as anything I could experience in the real world. He managed to evoke sensations and emotions in me as a reader. The author also incorporated photographs in this book that enhanced the reading experience and made the book even more captivating. It was a long read, but I was engaged from the very beginning of the book to the last page.

There was nothing I disliked about this book. It is a sublime memoir, a heartfelt glimpse into the life of the author and his role in trying to make the world a better place. The book was exceptionally well-edited, and I did not encounter any typographical or grammatical errors; therefore, I give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. Anyone seeking a motivational read would enjoy this book.
