Every country in the world has its own independence story. Funnily, even the colonizers themselves have their own stories of liberation from the Ancient Roman Empire; at least that is what my limited history tells me. Every one longs for freedom, that is why many people are willing to shed blood in order to be free. When I read A Dream For Peace, this quote rang in my head: ‘what is the point of being alive if you are not free?’

The biggest agenda in Dr. Ghoulem Berrah’s life has been to promote peace, irrespective of his position in life. He starts out as a young Algerian; whose country is under the French Government. Though he is an Arab, he still goes to school and learns the ways of foreigners in order to better his life. He later goes to university in France to study medicine and joins a student movement. This action puts him at the crosshairs of the government, as they think he is dangerous. He escapes to Morocco, where he takes part in the struggle to liberate his country as a guerrilla doctor. Life in bush is not that easy, but he survives it. Dr. Berrah then moves to the United States where he makes scientific discoveries meanwhile promoting peace to the best of his abilities. Soon, he gets a job as a right-hand man to the president of Cote d’Ivoire to the consternation of his own countrymen. Truly, this man does not have it easy.

This book is the culmination of a proud man’s life; a man who was not afraid to face adversity in order to ensure that peace prevailed no matter the situation. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah explicitly tells us his life story from the beginning to the end; though his wife wittingly gives her own view of his life after his death. The book is well written and is accompanied by authentic pictures and documents, giving it an original feel that is associated with an autobiography. The author has a lot of experience that he shares indiscriminately with the reader; one can easily visualize him and all that he is.

I could not find any negative aspect of this book. It is simply interesting, informative and life-changing. The author throughout his life has been a Muslim, but this does not stop him from appreciating and learning from other religions. This is critically life-changing. The book is very easy to read as it is arranged chronological with the events in the author’s life. The use of pictures adds to the entertainment value of the book.

The book appears to be exceptionally well-edited, as there are no errors present. The story is suitable for a mature audience of non-fiction fans. Nonetheless, this book does a couple of graphic scenes concerning wars which may not appropriate for the fainthearted. For all the above reasons, I rate this book four out of four stars .
