Anyone who has a normal sleeping capacity which includes sound, uninterrupted and timely sleep can be said to be richest person in healthy life. Getting enough quality sleep is very important for our mental, emotional, spiritual and physical health. This invaluable fact is explained by the author David Durocher in his book The Drug-Free Sleep Solution: The Four-Week Program for Overcoming Insomnia Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy by giving very common examples and his own experiences.' The Four-Week Program ' includes "cognitive restructuring", "sleep hygiene", behavioral techniques such as "stimulus control therapy", "breathing techniques" and "paradoxical intention". It also includes many stress reducing techniques such as "positive illusions", "Mindfulness Meditation", and "Christian Meditation".
Everyone who wants a healthier, well-balanced and happy life, has first to be totally fine and fresh by body and mind both, which is possible, only when he or she has a very good natural sleep gift. The author David Durocher has included in this book, all the principles, guidelines and techniques for getting normal/quality sleep at proper time. These are easy to understand, study, practice and use by the readers, who will certainly and definitely succeed in getting desired results.This book is not a medical book, still the author has described all the types of sleep disorders and insomnia. He has presented the required medical and drug information with references to it's origin. This shows his thorough study of the subject on medical line. This book is an in-depth and overall guide comprising of mental, emotional, spiritual and physical procedures and exercises to be used by the people suffering from sleep disorders. As the author says, in America today, insomnia has become a growing health concern. 1 in 3 people suffer with occasional insomnia, while 1 in 10 suffer from chronic insomnia. CBT-I has been clinically proven to be the gold standard for overcoming insomnia. It is designed to replace and overcome any negative thoughts about sleep and to overcome any stress which perpetuates sleeplessness and anxiety, followed by an unhealthy life. Commenting on our present life pattern the author says, the conditions of modern life have led to an increase in social isolation and lack of connectedness.The author has presented a scientific and practical solution to treat and correct the sleep disorders
This book has many positive aspects as simple language, full medical information with ready references and different meditation techniques. The medicines available and used for sleep disorders are explained in detail. He has discussed the reasons causing different conditions of insomnia. For example he says that unnecessary stress is the main cause of sleeplessness and stress can be both the cause and result of insomnia. " Unfortunately, too many people today create unnecessary stress in their lives due to conflicting values, negative attitudes, poor time management, an unhealthy lifestyle, and inertia. Uncontrolled stress easily leads to anxiety and depression as well." " What matters most in life, is not what happens but how we respond to what happens." The author has referred poet John Milton who once wrote: “The mind is its own place and in itself, can make a Heaven of Hell, a Hell of Heaven.” The meaning comes out to be that one has to monitor his or her thoughts with " positive illusions", "Mindfulness Meditation", and "Christian Meditation".
There are some negative aspects also. The treatment schedule of four weeks is not clear by sequence.The weeks one to four are linked to the details of discipline and procedures mentioned in the chapters five, three, four and six respectively! The chapters include subtitled chapters which makes the subject scattered. The combination of medical, psychological, philosophical and spiritual aspects in one subject could have been avoided.
I am rating this book 4 out of 4 stars. I liked the desire and intention of the author David Durocher to help people suffering from sleep disorders.The information given in the book clearly shows his vast study before writing this book. Editing, I say is professional, except a typos which I found easily .
I will recommend this book to all the people, having or not having any problem with their sleep, as they will get knowledge of many common irregularities ( if any ) in their behaviour.
