Review of A Dream For Peace
Everyone, at one point in their lives or the other, wants desperately to make a mark, to do something, to achieve something that puts them on the map for generations after. Humanity strives to be remembered, to have their lives on Earth have some meaning, but only a small percentage of the world's ever-growing population can ever achieve that goal. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is one of those few. From joining the movement for the decolonization of Algeria to formulating a hypothesis on the Reverse Transcriptase Enzyme to being appointed the Special Advisor to President Houphouët-Boigny, Dr. Ghoulem Berrah lived a life full of ever-increasing achievements and contributions to humanity.
This book tells the story of a man who chose to live the life that had been given to him to the best of his ability rather than wallowing away his time on earth in mediocrity. This book is an attempt to cram all the achievements and experiences of this great man into a consumable form to inspire others to achieve the same heights, and I must say that it very much succeeded. This is A Dream For Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah.
This was a very interesting book to read. While I am not usually a fan of autobiographies as I would rather make my own history rather than read about other people’s, this was most certainly worth the read. I enjoyed reading about Dr. Ghoulem as his life was very interesting and I very much enjoyed his storytelling style of writing. An accomplished man in many areas, Dr. Ghoulem also proved himself to be an excellent writer with this work.
Throughout the book, the author kept dropping so many philosophical texts and nuggets, and I quite enjoyed them. Whenever I came across a saying that stuck with me, I wrote it down in a little note to meditate on later. Dr. Ghoulem talked about the importance of humility, the meaning of happiness, and how materialism and the pursuit of wealth can distract one from what would make them happy. To quote him, "wealth is generated by hard work, but wealth is not what makes us who we are". This resonated with me, as while I know the importance of money and hard work, I feel that money should not be pursued to the extent that the chase for it is all that matters in one’s life.
There was nothing I disliked in the book, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The book was very well-edited, and I didn't detect any errors in the text. I would rate A Dream For Peace 4 out of 4 stars, as it was an excellent read. I would recommend this book to people looking for biographies or stories about great men who have left their mark on our world.
