In a century where colonialism, racism, and nepotism were domiciled on the African continent, here is a visionary, a dogged Algerian boy with an unwavering determination to fight for his country’s independence from French colonialism. The struggle started from his elementary education to his university days, where he officially began various activist groups to advocate for the preservation of African identity, Algerian independence, and most especially, to see his dream of peace fulfilled amongst humanity irrespective of race, language, and religion. Was this quest achieved in his lifetime? Stay tuned to find out.

A Dream For Peace is an inspirational autobiography by Ghoulem Berrah, an Algerian freedom fighter, a medical doctor, and a global diplomat. The book narrated a true-life story of an Algerian boy whose visionary prowess and tenacious acumen inspired him early. Right from his elementary education, he revolted against racism, colonialism, practitioners of nepotism, and any unfair practices against humanity that was predominant in the French colony. He organised various activist groups, such as the Front de Liberation Nationale (FLN), UGEMA, and others. In the cause of the struggle, he procured scholarships for African students and had them admitted into universities. The author had to risk his life in pursuing peace until victory was ascertained.

The author is a great man whom I deeply admire. His writing style and skills mesmerised me; I imagined how intelligent and engaging he described and narrated events. I give kudos to his writing prowess, which culminated in the pages of this book. The author seemed to pen down every detail of his lifetime, leaving no part untold. I liked that the author spiced the book’s pages with colourful pictures of various achievements and events, especially pictures of some African leaders.

Amidst the struggle for peace, Berrah still had an outstanding personality, which allowed him to meet influential personalities in politics, religion, and certain social circles. His love life and wedding story with Titi, an Ivorian lady, despite his being a Muslim, married a Catholic. This further demonstrates the author’s passion for achieving peace and harmony among all humans. I loved his continued commitment to President Houphount-Boigny, which later paid off. The author possessed great virtues like faith, duty, justice, peace and dialogue.

Numerous complex words were used abundantly in the book. This could discourage an average reader, although I found it an opportunity to build my vocabulary. The volume of the book can prevent a random reader from digesting the value and knowledge the book contains. Therefore, I suggest the book be presented in a movie.

I believe the book was professionally edited; I found a few errors. As a result, I give the book 4 out of 4 stars and strongly recommend it to autobiography fans, historians, African politicians, and all human freedom activists, particularly in Africa.

A single man being a doctor, freedom fighter, and global diplomat is very inspirational. I look forward to reading this book, so as to know more about the life of Dr Ghoulem Berrah.

Dr. Ghoulem Berrah led such an admirable life. One of the attributes of Berrah that I love was his stance on justice. He is also a man of creation and formation. Thanks for the detailed review.

There is more to life than just living the casual life. I love how the protagonist was able to influence people's lives by doing what he knew was right.

I must say that the author met so many influential personalities in his lifetime. One thing I like about him is his down-to-earth nature and his nonjudgmental attitude towards other religions. Nice review Francis.

From your review I got an interesting glimpse of what this book entails. Though I am not a fan of autobiographies, I feel this one would be of interest to me.
