Review of Surviving the Business of Healthcare
Who knew the realities of the business that is healthcare? Not many people do. What these corporations are willing to do for money is so scary and disheartening.
Barbara Galutia Regis M.S. PA-C is a medical professional and her story of how she came to face the realities of the profession she is in given the hope she went in feeling is a touch sad.
Barbara grew up in a family with a long history of serving (her great grandfather, grandfather, and father) and being part of the community, and helping people. This she learned first hand from her parents. Her father ran a medical practice in her small town and her mom was a homemaker. A homemaker who did all she could to help her husband in the pursuit of giving those in his community the best medical care possible regardless of who they were.
Learning the why behind how Barbara ended up in this field is important. Her passion is so clear across the pages of Surviving the Business of Healthcare and to understand where it stems from is beautiful to know.
Learning that she may have been blind to certain aspects of the medical care field was surprising given her experience in the field and yet she was. Now I can say if a medical professional is amazed by the cost of medical care what more an everyday person. A person who thinks their covered by medical insurance only to find out it isn’t. How much don’t we know about the business that is medical health care.
I think because it’s such a sensitive field and it deals with people’s lives we forget it’s a business. To healthcare professionals, it’s how they make a living. There are billions upon billions being generated every year through the care of people.
Barbara breaks all of this down with as much compassion as she is able. I attribute this compassion to how she was raised yes but more so I attribute it to her also becoming a patient in the medical care world. How to be an advocate for yourself as a patient. How to research what your medical insurance covers. All this I doubt she would have paid as much attention as she has had she not been a patient in this world. Had she remained on the outside as a caregiver and not a care receiver this book would have been a completely different one.
A book I doubt I would have found as filled with compassion as well as information written to be understood by everyone as this one is.
For this reason I give this book a 4 out of 4 stars. Surviving the Business of Healthcare deserves every star. I never thought I would feel so passionately about a self-health medical boom as I do about this one. Yet here I am feeling the need to recommend this book to those looking to take medical insurance to secure their medical futures.
I recommend this read to those looking to know more about how medical care exists as a business.
I also recommend this book to medical students as I believe they need to learn how to have compassion for patients as they sometimes can come across as out of touch and this might help with that.
