Review of A Dream For Peace
Fighting for one's country takes a lot of courage, wise decisions, and a willingness to sacrifice everything. This is a book about the author's life that sheds light on these facts.
Historically, Algeria was colonized by France. This colonization influenced the author's life academically, socially, and historically. Dr. Berrah lost his father when he was small. He was single-handedly raised by his mother. One day, while he was still in high school, he experienced a form of racism, which he found displeasing and was irritated by. He fought against it, and that was what sparked the ignition of fighting against racism and clamoring for freedom, especially for his country. He got a scholarship to study medicine in France, and while he was in France, he organized protests, movements, and groups that fought against racism and discrimination. However, this, at a point, didn't go as planned as there were internal factors and people that wanted his scholarship terminated and deported. How did he overcome this?
A Dream For Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is a memoir about a man who cares deeply about his country. The story ranges from the author's childhood to the time he was older. This allows the readers to visualize and explore the impact he really had on his generation.
I was able to understand the love of the author for his country. Despite changing his environment and going abroad, his deep love for his country never dropped, and he continued his patriotism. He was willing to sacrifice his life for his country's freedom. This event inspired the people around him, even his wife, who was from another country. Also, I love the author's unquenched desire for learning. Despite being a medical doctor and having spent most of his life fighting for his country, he sought knowledge and acquired a lot of it.
Also, I love how the author's mother took it upon herself to raise her kid alone after the death of her husband. It showed how brave and strong she was. This proved the extent of motherly love. Despite being poor, she was heroic and ensured she raised her boy properly, who later became a national icon.
There was nothing to fault or dislike about this book. I had a great time reading it. I believe the book was professionally edited because I only found one error. Therefore, I'm giving this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book to the younger generations of the world and African youth to learn part of their history.
