A Dream For Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is a memoir that guides us into the life of an unsung hero, Dr. Ghoulem Berrah. An Algerian who proved beyond doubt that you can do what you want irrespective of where you find yourself. He's not just a hero to the people of Algeria; he also wielded a certain level of affluence in Africa.

Dr. Ghoulem Berrah was born in Algeria during its colonization days. Growing up, he didn't like the way his people were treated. He wanted to be more than just a regular Algerian who did nothing concerning the French people. He performed brilliantly in school and was awarded a scholarship to study medicine in France. Despite being the only son of his mother, he took activism seriously after seeing how his people were stereotyped, even in France. He went further to study so that he wouldn't be inept when it came to the law. He would have backed down when he became a professor at Yale University. Instead, he saw it as an opportunity to use his experience of having lived in the western world to help his people. His struggles weren't easy, but they weren't futile either. He didn't just stop his good deeds in Algeria. He extended it to the whole of Africa.

I won't lie. Reading this book brought tears to my eyes. I must commend the selfless attitude of Dr. Ghoulem. Those at the helm of government today should take Dr. Ghoulem's lifestyle as a case study when they look for mentors. This man went on to prove that peace could be achieved by dialogue alone, and not necessarily by going to war. He didn't see religion when dealing with people; rather, he saw humanity. The core of his activism was to make not only Algeria peaceful but the world at large. Despite the voluminous nature of the book, it was worth the time. I could easily relate to the author, being that I came from Nigeria. A country that also suffered dearly at the hands of colonization. This book shows what charisma every leader should possess.

This book is a must-read for every growing child in the world. When children see people like this as mentors, then the future is in great hands. There wasn't anything to make me deduct a star from this book; therefore I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. The writer was meticulous in the way he told the story. His fussiness about Dr. Ghoulem's life made the book so absorbing. The book had several aspects that could be read separately. The author made sure to arrange his life chronologically, giving the readers a better understanding of this memoir. The book was so good that I didn't find anything worth hating about it.

The book was void of errors. This shows it was exceptionally well edited. I'd recommend it to every lover of memoirs and those who love to read about colonialism.

I wish those in government seats will read this book and learn from the life of Ghoulem. Some politicians seem to forget the main reason why they are in certain political positions. If you can't achieve what you were voted for, what then are you doing in the political position? Dr. Ghoulem's life is one to be learned from.
