Review of A Dream For Peace
In the book, A Dream For Peace, Ghoulem Berrah shared with us the story of his life and how he was able to discover purpose and then pursue it with all his might. Born into a respectable family in Algeria in 1932 made him see the discrimination and racism that was eating up his people as he grew up. His brave mother shaped him into the religious and responsible young man he became as his dad died when he was still very young, He pursued high learning to become a medical practitioner and was very active politically at school. His political involvement was not for any ulterior political reasons but for the good of his fellow Algerian students. This I can say was the beginning of his journey into purpose. He even went to prison for the very cause of advocating for justice but that did not stop him from seeking peace and good for all men. Though he was very intelligent to the extent of making landmark discoveries in science yet he still knew he wanted to live a life of purpose. His faithful dedication to President Houphouët got me intrigued. Can we still find men in Africa today who will enter politics with the sore aim of helping others and not for personal gain and prestige? How did he discover his purpose? Did he choose the prestige of America over fulfilling his purpose? Was he able to marry the woman he fell in love with? Was he able to finish well?
The pursuit of purpose, peace, harmony and tribal and religious tolerance this book portrays is something that our generation needs to the reminded of. I like the way he was able to open up every aspect of his life to us in the book. From each session, if we open our minds enough, we will learn valuable lessons. The book made me appreciate the value of things incorporated in a very young child as well as the importance giving our all in all we do. From a perspective, it seemed to me that the author was not one to have regrets but saw the good in every situation and maximized them very well.
From another perspective though, the author almost made it look as though he was a perfect person and his opinion was always right. Even when he was to marry a person that was not the love of his life, he portrayed to us that it was the advice of another that made him do it. He seemed to me too good to be true a person.
I will rate the book 4 out of 4. The book was professionally edited. And I had no big issue with the book.
I will recommend this book to anyone who has even a slight interest in politics. It is a must-read for all Algerians and Cote d'Ivoire citizens. Every African should also read it as it speaks about efforts that have been made to bring about peace and harmony in Africa. Generally, I believe anyone who loves reading about other people's lives will enjoy the book.
