Review of Stupid Divorce
STUPID DIVORCE, is a short companion piece to the author's first book Smart Love. Smart Love is a self-help book for couples, it's aim was to give real advice on how to save a failing marriage. Unfortunately, the author's marriage failed even with the hard work they put in. STUPID DIVORCE is the authors emotional fictional retelling of the events leading up to his divorce. It exsaminse the pain and anger that a Christan man experiences when they get divorce, when every think they believe tells them that divorce is wrong.
Not a lot of self help gurus would go back and admit their advice didn't work, which is why I respect the author for writing STUPID DIVORCE and trying to be emotionally vulnerable about a very difficult event in their life. I also liked that he didn't use his ex-wife's real name. I am glad they did this because at least his children can't Google their mothers name and find this book.
Unfortunately, though I liked the book in phery, I didn't like it in practice. The book feels poorly edited at points stopping and falling into long legal jagon. Each chapter starts with a metaphorical seen of a funeral, it got repetitive quickly. It also reviled how much the author believes they are blameless in the situation. The author missed the opportunity to break down what activities in his first book didn't work. Instead the book is fall of the authors his anger that he vented about this ex-wife. She is blamed for the divorce completely, even though the author reveals their own mistakes which are worse, they can not seem to see their own responsibility. It was disconcerting that the author continuously calls their ex-wife his wife, it felt delusional and overly posesive.
This was a difficult book to rate because it has problems but I do see that others may enjoy it. So I decided to rate it 2 out of 4 stars. I am taking 1 star off for the poor editing and 1 star off because it didn't meet the expectation that the books description set for the story.
I don't think this book will be useful for men going through divorce, so I can not recommend it to them. I do recommend this for English students studying unreliable narrators, this is an excellent example of the trope. I also recommend the author rereads this book and edits it to protect their children from reading this one day and seeing the vitriol aimed at their mother.Divorce is the authors emotional fictional retelling of the events leading up to his divorce. It exsaminse the pain and anger that a Christan man experiences when they get divorce, when every think they believe tells them that divorce is wrong.
