Review of A Dream For Peace
How much can a person accomplish in life? This was a question I kept asking myself while reading Dr. Ghoulem Berrah's A Dream for Peace. So many accomplishments in so little time, I was constantly trying to catch my breath. This memoir follows the author from his humble beginnings in Aïn Beïda, Algeria to his days as a medical student in France, and finally to his academic career and achievements in America. As the book progresses, the author's resilience, patriotism, and optimistic outlook on life leave a lasting impression on the reader.
This memoir is the most riveting book I've read in a long time because it's amazing how little is known about such a distinguished man as Dr. Berrah. His efforts in the fight for independence extend beyond the borders of his home country, as he was deeply involved in the struggle for independence from colonial powers in Morocco as well. He went on to make significant scientific discoveries, which led to his induction into the Sigma Xi Society, a fraternity that recognizes scientific achievement. Then, at the pinnacle of his career, he decides to relocate to Cotê d'Ivoire to work alongside President Houphouët-Boigny, for whom he served as an advisor until his death.
It is not easy to change one's life path, especially when one is comfortable, but Dr. Berrah does it repeatedly, demonstrating that growth can only occur outside of our comfort zones. This book taught me many lessons and provided me with many other pleasures. One of the things is how easily the author offers his assistance whenever it is needed; his generosity knows no bounds. The manner in which the story was written made it both entertaining and educational. It is worth noting is that the author is a romantic at heart and never gave up despite all the difficulties he faced while trying to marry his third wife, Titi, whom he refers to affectionately throughout the book as his love. I also liked how he never shied away from hard work or difficult situations, and how he provided details on how numerous crises were averted, which I found fascinating. The picture excerpts included in the novel were also really appreciated.
The only criticism I have for this book is that it is extremely technical in some parts. There were some aspects that simply went over my head, but they were few and far between. It's important to note that the book was meticulously edited, and I found no errors.
Overall, this was a fantastic read, and I rate it a 4 out of 4 stars because, despite its length, I thoroughly enjoyed it. There are numerous lessons to be drawn from the author's exemplary life. I recommend this book to readers who are interested in activist autobiographies, diplomacy, and colonialism.
