Conversing with Various Entities by Mary Ellen Wall is a novel about how the author tries to communicate with numerous entities around her and succeed in a few ways. She believes in Dowsing which is a method used in ancient times, mainly to locate the direction of flow of underground water. A person stands with a y- shaped rod and walks around until the rod shows some kind of movement indicating the presence of water. The author also used this method to locate a place to drill a water well. She took a piece of branch and walked around until the dowsing tool indicated the presence of water with a slight tilt. She saw it with disbelief and decided to drill the well in that exact place as she had no other way to find the water’s location. To her surprise, the well pumped water out continuously even after a decade with no trouble.

That’s when she started to believe in the voices of everything surrounding her. She started to try out other ways to communicate like the Ouija Board, divining rod etc… She also tried the ways that were still theories and came up with scientific explanations to it. The entire novel elabortes her encounter with the voices and the attempts she made to improve them.

The novel is well- edited as I found no errors in it or whatsoever. The author never doubted her believes and kept continuing her search for tools to communicate. She neither got demotivated or let others believes influence her. She researched a lot to prove her ideas. She also came up with a challenge to all the readers which is so thoughtful of her. She used simple English to write the entire novel that made it easier to read. Reading this novel felt like having a real-time conversation with the author. The author also attached a lot of images that gave a good idea about what she was writing about.

This novel was really short. The author could’ve tried to elaborate her experiences a little more. The cover page could be improved as I don’t find it eye-catching or very attractive. I didn’t find the story much interesting as I don’t have faith in dowsing or the voices of nature and the surrounding objects.

I rate this novel 2 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book to adult readers who is interested in communicating with non-living objects and believes in them.
