Review of Surviving the Business of Healthcare
In the book surviving the business of healthcare: Knowledge is power written by Barbara Galutia, the author discusses the business model in the healthcare industry in the modern time and how it radically differs from the former days. Galutia, working as a physician assistant in the healthcare industry for several years, auspiciously points out that the industry has lacked in integrity and abandoned its original mission: serving the people and helping them maintain and regain their health. Galutia was also diagnosed with cancer, putting her in a unique and unfortunate position to experience the healthcare system from the other side.
The book is an educative steer to those pursuing healthcare today and in the near future. Galutia’s work is a detailed guide to help one maneuver in the right direction even when they lack the concept of how the healthcare industry functions. The author understands the changes that have happened in the industry since her father’s time as a doctor and hence provides necessary intel to her audience to use as they seek healthcare. She takes us back to her childhood and teenage years when the healthcare professionals’ core aim was serving the people and helping them overcome grief and tragedy. In the book’s chapters, there is a detailed review of the different concepts and aspects necessary to know while accessing healthcare, including how to wisely choose one’s primary care provider. The book describes all steps and processes (with a single chapter focusing on a specific step or process) involved in the admittance of a patient, consulting the right doctors, deciding on the better treatment mode, and the proceedings after discharge from the hospital, inclusive of rehabilitation, finding home health care, and accessing caregivers for help.
The biggest reason I find this book such an impressive read is the use of diction and normal language to describe intricate medical details, making it easier for the reader to understand the book’s contents. In addition, Galutia vividly explains terms and processes. She also includes her life experiences within the pages of this short read, making it easier for the audience to apply and use her experience to reach their own decisions. The author also demonstrates great skill in her line of work, making the book highly informative on different facets of healthcare like what aspects to consider when choosing healthcare insurance.
Despite the book's commendable writing, I found the repetitive use of the phrase “ a glimpse into our not so gloomy town” quite unnecessary. Here, the author is referring to the healthcare system during her teenage years and intends for it to have a nostalgic feel. The phrase, however, does not evoke any such feelings, and only feels redundant.
”I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars for a couple of reasons. Firstly because it was a short, straightforward, and highly informative read. It is also professionally edited with hardly any notable grammatical errors. The book is recommended for people from all walks of life as there is no use of vulgar or racist language. It is particularly useful for people who desire to know more about the intricacies of the modern healthcare industry.
