Review of A Dream For Peace
A Dream For Peace is a detailed memoir about the life of a man named Ghoulem Berrah. An international diplomat who lived a life devoted to seeking for Peace, Unity and Liberty. As mentioned earlier that the book gives a detailed account of a man who constantly worked toward peace. Berrah was an Algerian independence advocate who studied medicine in France and was later apprehended for his political activism in Spain after an attempt to flee from France and upon arriving in Spain handed themselves over to the Spanish officials so as to confess their illegal entrance to the country. He also travelled to China and America both to study and lecture. Berrah also led medical research of DNA, visited religious sites such as Mecca mostly visited by people of the Muslim religion, and the Vatican, and served as an ambassador on peace negotiations between Israel and Palestine.
The book is packed with details that give us an idea of the historic events that transpired in his youth days. It documents how French colonizers worked toward doing away with the history of his native land, Alegria. How he got involved in activism, and how he transitioned from Science into Political advising. Accounts of meeting world leaders are a highlight of the book as well. From Mao Zedong to Fidel Castro, including how Berrah sabotaged Fidel Castro's speech by pretending his microphone had been cut off. Precise and lively descriptions-the dimensions of a jail cell, the flickering light bulb overhead-make the book's setting palpable. The conversations held allows the reader to envision himself or herself as a passive listener.
The book's length allows for excessive descriptions and general long windedness. Berrah's socially observant narrations sometimes focuses on the wider side of the world than it does on the narrator himself. The book is very thorough in it's accounting-naming precisely the people who stood next to each other and their respective order at the funeral for example. These actually drag the pace and may be unnecessary.
However these are not reasons enough to hinder the rating of the book. I rate this book a perfect score of 4 out of 4 stars as it is exceptionally edited, without any errors noted as this would have caused a subtraction in the rating score. Inspirational quotes liven up the text and produce a zeal for the reader to proceed to the next chapters of the book.
The book genuinely relates to most if not all persons. I would recommend this book to single parents as the mother of Ghoulem Berrah is seen to be the reason behind this man's success and mindset. The early habits instilled by his mother as as young boy seem to have lingered on for the rest of his life. I would recommend this book to any scholars particularly those in high school and college as Mr Berrah shows us that it takes academic excellence to do more not only for yourself but also for the generation to come. We also see how a life of morals, integrity and humility regardless of your social or economic background could make a trail blazing leader. These traits seem to have been the hallmark of Dr Ghoulem Berrah.
