Are you in search of an inspirational reading piece? I believe A Dream For Peace is a book that hits that note. It is a memoir written by the author, Dr. Ghoulem Berrah.

The author was born in Algeria in the year 1938. He was a pious man following his Muslim beliefs. He obtained a scholarship to study in Bordeaux, France as a medical student. He received his Master's degree in Biology at Indiana University in 1961, and in 1963, he received his Ph.D. Subsequently, he became a lecturer at Yale School of Medicine between 1963 and 1965. Despite his achievements, the author felt he needed to do something more with his life and knowledge. He became an advisor to the president of Côte d’Ivoire, namely Felix Houphouët Boigny. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah became known as an activist, freedom fighter, and ambassador for world peace. To sum up, there was not much he could not do.

This memoir is flawless and an eye-opening read. With the amount of knowledge he shares with you, you get a sneak peek of what happens behind those closed political doors. For example, the author knew of a speech that Fidel Castro prepared. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah came up with a clever idea to have the microphone cut out in the middle of Castro’s speech. As the audience, you would think it was a technical issue but as the reader, you understand it was a strategic move played on Dr. Ghoulem Berrah's part.

The book, in its entirety, was easy to follow. There was no meandering off topic with unnecessary anecdotes, and it was, in my opinion, short and sweet. The events are written in the order they occur. As the audience, you feel as though you are growing with the author. You are told not only of the work the author has accomplished but of the struggles and pitfalls he faced in trying to liberate his people of Algeria and in the fight for world peace. This book is very well written. I did not encounter any spelling or grammatical errors. Therefore, I believe the book was edited by a professional.

The pages are filled with positive scriptures and quotes. You will find, written on page 370, is one of my favorite quotes, "Tell Arafat that I will remain until my death, the servant of peace- a just and lasting peace." You will also discover images of people Dr. Ghoulem worked with throughout his active life.

As for the negatives, I have none. The book was well structured, it was fascinating, and the author imparts quite a bit of wisdom to the reader. I could feel the author's warmth, kindness, beliefs, and strengths with every story I read.

For the reasons I have listed above, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. A Dream For Peace can be enjoyed by many. Though the author speaks of religious topics, he advocates for all religions to accept one another and work together to achieve world peace. To quote a line from page 3, "In this Cathedral, we work with the same enthusiasm. Catholics, Muslims, Jewish, and Animists." Why do I bring up this quote? I think audiences who are very open-minded and of any religious background will enjoy this book because it is inclusive of all religious backgrounds. There is no discrimination regarding which religion you choose to believe or follow. I would also recommend the book to those who appreciate history and politics and have an interest in activism. I thoroughly enjoyed A Dream For Peace to the fullest, and I hope many are lucky enough to come across this memoir.
