People who are one-of-a-kind are always worth the effort. I'm fortunate to have learned about a few through books, and spending time reading about them is a delight for the soul. This memoir, A Dream for Peace, is not just a biography of Dr. Ghoulem Berrah's life, but rather a window into his inspiring and remarkable life, which may be considered both a biography and a backstory of history. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah was born in the Algerian village of Aïn Beïda during a period when Algeria was heavily confined and governed by France. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah was born in Algeria, but by naturalization he was both an Ivorian and an American. He had a fantastic relationship with his mother, who, although not educated, instilled in her children the desire to work for a good cause early in life and ensured that they were exposed to their culture. He was the only surviving boy among his mother's children.

Dr. Ghoulem Berrah studied medicine in the United States, excelled, and was the first scientist to propose a concept for the "Reverse Transcriptase Enzyme". He was a key figure in the movement for Algeria's independence, and he also helped in the never-ending effort to establish a dialogue between Palestine and Israel. When he returned to Africa to pursue his quest for peace and love, he also worked as a Special Advisor to President Houphouët-Boigny. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah traveled around the world forty times, married three times, and was a passionate advocate for peace and tolerance for people of all faiths. All of Dr. Ghoulem Berrah's family, homeland, customs, crises, struggles, and unwavering endeavors to make the world a better place were explored in the book. The book gives insight into the colonial legacy of Algeria and the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

Reading this beautiful memoir by such a devoted and intellectual man was extremely encouraging. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah's life is worth imitating because, despite the problems he encountered from infancy, he grew up well, was resourceful, always willing to help, had a deep and profound desire to learn, and is incredibly determined to do whatever he sets his mind to. The book is really well put together and enjoyable to read.

Even as a religious person, I found his efforts to continually seek peace and tolerance appealing, as well as his belief in moral obligations, particularly sacrifice, which is unique to Christian and Muslim religions. The author's insights are emotional and moving, allowing his personal life to shine through in this book. The book is educational, and it was written in an easy-to-understand language. This gave the reader a seamless experience with the book. The inclusion of footnotes for unknown words enhances the reading experience. The book also includes images of Dr. Ghoulem Berrah's experiences, which are quite useful in helping the reader envision the narrative, albeit the quality of the photos isn't great.

I can't say I disliked anything because this book is well-written and free of errors. Each chapter contained a title that highlighted the chapter's content and a glossary, making it simple to navigate. His love life is pretty humorous, and his perseverance to marry his ultimate wife despite all the family and religious obstacles is admirable. The relationship and influence that Dr. Ghoulem Berrah and President Houphouët-Boigny shared kept me wondering if such a personality is still in existence in politics. This narrative would educate readers a lot about selflessness and patriotism. I give Dr. Ghoulem Berrah's A Dream for Peace a rating of 4 out of 4 stars.

I recommend this book to history lovers and anyone interested in learning more about Africa's post-colonial past. It will capture readers who are interested in memoirs, politics, nonfiction, and true stories.
