Review of A Dream For Peace
There is a saying that true purpose in life can only be found by a commitment to something greater than oneself. After reading this book, I fully concur.
A Dream for Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is his autobiography. The book chronicles his life story, beginning with his birth in his home country of Algeria, his childhood, and his schooling. He narrates his fight for the liberation of his country, a struggle that even lands him in prison. He goes to the United States of America, where he becomes an accomplished scientist. He eventually joins the service of President Houphouet- Boigny of Cote d'Ivoire as his special advisor, a role that forms the base for his later diplomatic work. It is a touching tale of growth, love, friendship, and one man's fight for universal peace and tolerance.
What I loved most about the book was the underlying tone of humility. Despite the amazing things the author has achieved, he remains humble throughout. He is not shy to attribute his success to the influence of people around him, especially his mother and wife. His personality strikes a chord in my heart and made me respect him even more. The author is also a champion of tolerance, a trait that has become somewhat alien today. He witnesses the oppression his countrymen are subjected to by the colonialists. He is personally convicted and jailed at one point in the fight for liberation. Despite all this, which would be enough to drive the average man to hate, the author remains tolerant, advocating for peace above all else.
The events in the book are arranged in excellent chronological order, which ensures the story flows well. The reader is not left with any lingering questions about what could have been left out. The book also contains pictures of influential figures and events in the author's life. This made me feel closer to the story and allowed me to resonate with the message as I could put faces to the people I was reading about. The message of hope also resonated with me. Like the author, I believe that a peaceful world is achievable if we all put in the work.
The book is a true testament to the impact one man can have on the world. It is also exceptionally edited. After an enjoyable read, I did not find any negative thing in it. In light of this, I would give it a rating of four out of four.
I am glad to have read Dr. Ghoulem Berrah's story. The book pays homage to one of Africa's finest sons. I would highly recommend it to diplomats and students of African history.
