Review of A Dream For Peace
A Dream For Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is a work of non-fiction that delves into the life of the author. It is a memoir. The book contains 644 pages, and it is divided into seventeen chapters with unique headings that give an idea of what each chapter entails. The book starts with the story behind the birth of Ghoulem and the environment that he was born into. The first chapter of the book gives details of his life from his birth to his university education. Ghoulem was born in Aïn Beïda, a small town in the province of Constantine, at the foot of the Aurès Mountains, in northeastern Algeria. At that time, Algeria was under the strong influence of France. He finished his primary education and enrolled in the Cours Complémentaire, a four-year syllabus attended exclusively by a majority of French students, which concluded at the middle school level with a certificate of completion. The educational process was very intense, but unlike the indigenous school, the environment was imperiled by blatant racism. The second chapter of the book delves into the hardship he encountered at a particular period of his life, and it also talks about the event that got him arrested. After his father's death, he joined the University of Bordeaux in France for his medical program. The racism and discrimination that he experienced prompted him and some of his friends to create an anti-racism society that will stand against every form of injustice.
A Dream For Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is an inspiring book that has a lot of lessons within it. This book was written with a first-person narrative. The book felt personal, and I love the fact that he used dates to make the story accurate. One thing I love about the memoir is the connection between Ghoulem and his mother. Although the author used some big words, it did not disrupt my connection with the story. The memoir had a good characterization, and I love the writing style of the author.
The prologue gives an ample idea of what the book entails. The book also talks about secularism and religious faith. It is necessary to have respect for one's religious faith and beliefs.
I enjoyed reading this book. There was nothing negative within this book, and I appreciate Ghoulem's exemplary attitude. One thing that the book shows is the veracity with which African students stood against colonialism. They wanted national sovereignty, and they earnestly strived for it. They experienced physical violence, and I love how they endured the undue hardship imposed on them. I love the unity between Ghoulem and his friends. Ghoulem did a wonderful job of standing for the freedom of Algeria.
This book was well written. This book was exceptionally edited. I did not notice any grammatical or spelling errors while reading this book.
Colonization is a phenomenon that has its merits and demerits. Standing for something can be very hectic, and it is necessary to uphold certain values. However, I recommend this book to every human rights activist, and I believe that it will motivate them to keep striving. Therefore, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars due to its concise nature and because of Ghoulem's attitude.
