Review of The Altitude Journals
The author, David J. Mauro, has illustrated his journey of climbing the highest peaks of all the 7 continents on Earth through his book The Altitude Journals. The book is not just about the author's trekking journey; it is about his journey physically, psychologically, and emotionally. His expedition begins through an emotional phase in his life wherein the author tries to overcome the anxiety he faced due to his failed marriage and divorce. Throughout his journey, the author deals with many obstacles within his life. The journey navigates him to the path of finding clarity in life. Every mountain gave different learnings to the author. The story also covers the journey of the various other important people in his life: his family, colleagues, and trekking companions. Hence, the book is a compilation of many diverse stories yet, majorly the trekking journey.
The descriptive story writing is profound. It made it possible to imagine being vividly on the actual journey. The speech used seemed thoroughly frank and genuine. One could find learnings applicable in their individual lives through reading this book. It also has a glimpse of natural beauty, a few humorous incidents and many dialogues.
The book is quite well-edited, yet, a slight editing error was noted. There were very few parts of the story, that were unnecessary and maybe the story wouldn't be affected by its deduction from the book. Though not used extensively, I disliked the profanity in the book. According to me, it could have been more accessible to young children by avoiding it.
I rate this book a 3 out of 4. I enjoyed reading this book and its experiences throughout. The reason, for a point of deduction, is simply the above mentioned minor changeable aspects. Overall, it was a good read.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes reading about life experiences, trekking and real stories. It can be inspiring and motivational to all the people who may be facing a hard time emotionally.
The book also contains some beautiful summit pictures and other photos concerning the incidents mentioned in the book. The several encounters mentioned in the book are simply pleasing. It is good to know about the story of the other important people and not just the author throughout the book.
The book has all that you can expect from a journal. It is simply a good story, a good journal and a good biography.
