Create the Life You Want by Raymond Gerson evaluates the various goals people set in life and ways to shift perspective in order to maximize the true potential our lives have. The solutions he offers are simple changes in the way we typically go about achieving our goals and he provides real life anecdotes to show how these changes have worked, not only in his own life but also in the lives of others. He references many influential figures throughout history life Gandhi to make his examples more profound.

I felt that Mr. Gerson kept his advice simple and straightforward so that the average reader could understand and digest the information. I feel that it’s important he did that because often times self-help books like this one can become to convoluted and confuse readers, or even discourage them because the advice seems to be too complicated. Mr. Gerson doesn’t recommend radical change in order to achieve a successful, fulfilling life, but rather small, simple changes in behavior or outlook that make a monumental difference in the grand scheme. He also provides relatable anecdotes from his life, as well as from the lives of well known historical figures so that the readers can see the application of the principles he mentions and how astounding they can be.

While I believe Mr. Gerson delivered a truly informative piece of literature, I felt that the anecdotes could have been intertwined with the principles he wanted to focus on a bit better. At times it felt choppy to switch from the anecdote immediately to the principle being focused on in the chapter. I would have also liked a little bit more analysis of the principles. As soon as I began to understand and digest the material, the chapter was done and I was moved on to the next principle.

I give this book a three out of four stars. I liked the message and purpose of the book and I felt as though I could really benefit from the topics presented and the questions given to prompt inner dialogue. I typically get bored a chapter or two into self-help books but I didn’t with this one. However, it felt like it could have been a bit more in depth, like it was just scratching the surface of what the principles could be in every day life. Adding a deeper analysis to the principles and weaving the anecdotes into the analysis in a smoother way would complete the final star.

This book would fit a wide audience, anywhere from young adults trying to find a path to start down to the middle aged or later adults who went down a path they thought was right for them only to find out they aren’t as happy as they thought they would be. This could even be useful for high school students to give them the necessary tools to figure out where they want their life to go before they enter the world without a shred of idea of what they want to do.
