Review of Why Can't Johnny Just Quit?
The name Johnny is often used to describe bad behavior in children and to correct mistakes. Addiction has brought havoc in society, being the cause of broken marriages, crimes, and death. Why Can’t Johnny Just Quit? is an extensive guidebook about addiction. The author Kyle Oh is a physician specializing in pain medicine. He developed an interest in the subject after his patient overdosed on pain medication and got addicted to it. In his book, he defines addiction as continued behavior despite knowing that such continued behavior will harm oneself. Most people fail to understand addiction is simply what is going on inside the brain and Dr. Oh asks his patients how the drug made them feel to determine whether they are addicted. Moreover, it analyses the misconceptions that people have about addiction including that people perceive it as a personality flaw rather than a disease. Only recently, Health Insurance covers alcoholism and this has contributed to discussions on how to treat the disease. The chapters extensively explain common addiction signs, how patients have become addicted to medication and how alcoholism has been fought in the world. Including the reduction of the supply of the drugs and scare tactics.
What I like about the book is that Dr.Oh has written about his patients' cases of addiction and how he was able to solve them. He has provided solutions that can be used in the real world considering this is a global issue. He also defines some technical words in the book which makes them easier to understand. I have learned that scaring people about the negative effect of the effects does not work. This has been used even in schools despite the negative results. The author is very knowledgeable about addiction and has used various historical accounts and evidence to prove his argument. The author also describes addiction as a problem that can be solved and prevented.
What I don’t like about the book is the subjective nature of Dr. Oh as he argues against every study. This includes the fact that not everyone can get addicted to drugs because a high is defined as a feeling of intense euphoria. This is argumentative since the characteristics of individuals who cannot get addicted to drugs have not been concluded. The book is also technical in some chapters and it may be challenging for some readers.
I would give this book a 4 out of 4 stars because it has been professionally edited. Each chapter has been discussed in-depth and it is easy to refer to them. The book is useful in society because although addiction is a great issue it has been ignored since people do not know how to handle addicts due to lack of information. I believe that it is an issue that needs to be handled despite it being not an SDG.
I recommend this book to readers who are interested in the topic of drug addiction.
