Review of A Dream For Peace
Throughout history through to this time, Africa surfers high levels of religious intolerance, periods of colonization by foreign governments, and political unrest due to disunity.
Most especially, religious intolerance and disunity in the political sector seem unchangeable in most parts of Africa. These bring altercation, social stagnation, and some other economic-related problems.
This menace calls for a holistic approach from Africa's elites with the sacrificial nature, love of one's country, humanitarianism, and lack of materialism to set the pace for peace and unity even with the little contribution possible.
An example of this way of life can be read about in the memoir A Dream For Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah.
A Dream For Peace is a memoir in which the author gave an account of his life, consisting of his background, circumstances, and the messianic contribution he had played to the peace and unity of various African countries as well as ground-breaking achievements in some fields of study.
The book opens with brotherly remarks from friends of Ghoulem. The remarks testified to the author's consecrated life of religious tolerance, family love, and desire to serve humanity. One of which was from H. E. Monsignor Justo Mullor García. It then continues to tell the family background of the author, characterized by Islamic culture, the motherly affection he received, and his educational background through to his many achievements as a scholar, human rights activist, politician, scientist, and a man of love conquest.
For example, he was the first scientist to hypothesize what was later discovered as the Reverse Transcriptase Enzyme. He won lots of scholastic awards. He worked selflessly with president Houphouët-Boigny of Côte d'Ivoire to serve Africa and better the world. With this, he could use the concept of dialogue to bring peace to Israel and Palestine by resolving the altercation between them.
From the book, it was obvious that he's not the one to bend what he believes to be just for bribery. This is evident when he rejected bribery to stop encouraging students' strikes—seeing the bribery as a comic scene.
His life exemplified religious tolerance, as he could successfully marry Titi, a woman from a Christian family, in the face of family opposition.
I love reading this book because I love reading memoirs, especially to tell about the legendary life of people who existed before me; this book is one. Also, I could learn about other countries' cultures in marriage, cuisines, and politics. The author made the book as informative as he could, providing pictorial detail of each personality and entity that has played an important role in his life. There's a picture of president Houphouët-Boigny of Côte d'Ivoire; there's a picture showing the front of the Arabic school he attended and so on that gave the book the quality of an informative journal from which valuable pieces of information about Africa can be taken.
I also like the fact that the author tried to make his memoir realistic and like a store of family information by including pictures of those scenes representing his achievements and those of his family members, such as his father, wives, peers, etc.
There's nothing I dislike in this book from the message Ghoulem is trying to convey as well as the manner and tone with which he presented it. The book is easy to read; though I didn't finish it at once. Each time I start reading, I wouldn't like to drop it. This is because each sentence carries interesting and important information.
From a literary point of view, the book is exceptionally well-edited. I could not spot one typo or grammar error in it. Hence, A Dream For Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah earns a rating of 4 out of 4 stars from me.
I'll recommend the book to two lovers of memoirs and readers who want to have some knowledge about Africa. If you like reading about the life of icons and successful personalities around the world, you would also love to read this book.
