Review of Surviving the Business of Healthcare
The popular saying, "Health is Wealth," adds emphasis to the importance of healthcare in our society today. As important as this sector is to human existence, it faces a lot of challenges, from inadequate financing to ignorance on the part of the people. Surviving the Business of Healthcare by Barbara Galutia Regis PA-C is a concise and information-packed work, in which the author gives an overview of the healthcare sector from both the perspectives of a healthcare provider and a patient.
From the perspective of a patient, she reveals that she was diagnosed with cancer shortly after finishing the final chapter of this book. She shares her experience from when she was diagnosed, her ordeals, and how she tries to overcome them. From the perspective of a healthcare provider, she gives a brief history of medical care from back in the day, having come from a family of medical practitioners herself down to the present time, highlighting some of the significant changes that have occurred over time. Also treated is the topic of health insurance, its evolution, and importance, as well as issues like the importance of PCP, how to get the right PCP, ways to reduce the cost of drugs and hospital admissions, and some legal matters in healthcare.
I'm so happy I came across this book, even as a medical student, I did not have half the knowledge contained in this book. I love the way the author made the book concise, and the simple language used in passing across the message. It made the writing interesting for me, as a much longer one might have been boring. I found myself looking forward to reading the "glimpse into our not-so-sleepy town" stories, as the author used life experiences to pass messages, which I found quite appealing. Although I haven't always been a fan of memoirs, this one made quite an impression on me, maybe because it was centered on healthcare, and that is one of my interests. I just have to commend the author on a job well done.
I did not dislike anything in this book; rather, I loved its flow, conciseness, friendly vocabulary, and the practical experiences described. There's a lot to be learned from it. I thought the book was centered on the United States only, but after reading it, I discovered that wasn't the case. Before coming across this book, I had thought that career choices in the healthcare sector revolved around doctors and nurses, but after reading this, I've discovered that there are a lot of career choices available, even some I never knew about until today.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars as I did not encounter any errors in the course of my reading, showing that it was exceptionally well-edited. I recommend this book to those with an interest in healthcare services.
