Review of Why Can't Johnny Just Quit?
Have you ever wondered why someone recurs negative consequences from taking alcohol or any other drug but they still keep taking more at their peril? Scientists term this habit as addiction. But why would one succumb to addiction, when after all, they had a choice not to indulge themselves in taking the drug in the first place? The author attempts to elaborate more on this mystery of addiction, to help his readers understand 'why can't Johnny just quit' drinking or abusing drugs.
In this incredible book, Why Can't Johnny Just Quit? by Kyle Oh, the author demystified the misconceptions and misunderstandings that surround this topic of addiction. He has applied his extensive experience over the years as a physician and tackling issues of addiction. He tries to clear the airwaves by disagreeing with the common myth that, anyone can generally get high by abusing a given drug and succumb to addiction after excessive use of that drug. The author in lieu opines that addiction tends to rely on underlying genetical susceptibility, and the excessive use of the same.
Does it mean one can use a drug without getting addicted? The author proves this point with meticulous and well-researched conclusions, that it's possible to not succumb to drug addiction if you're not susceptible to this drug. However, an individual should be aware of the signs that indicate their susceptibility to the drug right on the onset stage of taking a particular drug. Throughout the book, the author defined this topic intensively and explicitly shows how one would detect earlier the possibility of succumbing to addiction. He went further to show that, at times what is thought to be an addiction tends to be dependence of the victim on that particular drug. There might be silver lining in such a case of dependence for it may be easier for the victim to just quit taking the drug without much struggle and side effects.
I found the book quite informative, full of great insights on the issue of addiction, and from which I learned a lot. I liked how the author approached this subject of addiction in a simplified and meticulous manner. He went further to include real-life cases of addiction and dependence, to help his audience get a better understanding of the distinction between the two cases. Additionally, I enjoyed the author's creative way of charming the book with some interesting jokes in between making the content hilarious and enjoyable as well. He also added valid information in easy to recall mnemonics to further make it easier for the readers to recall this vital knowledge.
Lastly, I had nothing to dispute about in the book as I was thrilled with the good work that the author has done. Hence, I had nothing to dislike in the book. If I were to recommend this book, I would recommend it to the adult readers who are prone to indulging in drug abuse. Nonetheless, the book would be perfectly suited to medical practitioners in this field of addiction and counseling on drugs. This is because, the author showed explicit disagreement with the often-used approach towards the issue of drug addiction, proving how much medical personnel in this field tend to take an ill approach towards this issue of drug addiction.
Consequently, I will rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. It was well-written and exceptionally well-edited. Thus, I felt it deserved a full star rating.
