Review of A Dream For Peace
Dr. Ghoulem Berrah puts his life’s journey in the fine prints of this memoir titled A Dream for Peace: An Ambassador’s Memoir . He begins the memoir by taking us back to his early life as a teenager and a young schoolboy. He was born in a country called Algeria as an only child to his parents. At the time of his birth and years after, Algeria had been under the colonial rule of the French.
He grew up in an environment where he saw the atrocities that were being subjected to his people. This sparked a fire of rebellion inside him. He got enrolled to get an education in a nearby school and by the time he was finishing high school he had gathered a group of like-minded young men. These men, like him, were tired of the colonial oppression.
From this moment on he dedicated his life to the course of freedom for his country. He was a young brilliant mind and after he passed his main exams, he got admission to Bordeaux university in France to pursue medicine. While in France, he kept on fighting for his country. It wasn’t long before the authorities caught wind of this and hunted him down. The long arm of the government caught up with him when he was in Pamplona in Spain.
I found this book to be very inspiring for me as a young person in my early twenties. Reading about the courage of a young and brilliant person who defied all odds and archived so much gave me a kick in the butt as I was challenged to do more with myself and become more. I also liked how the author brought out the theme of colonialism and highlighted the struggles that Africans went through and how they fought for their history. I feel like it is important for the world to know these stories.
The only problem that I had with this book was that it was a very long read. I however enjoyed reading the book. I also dis not spot any spelling mistakes or typing errors in the book. I commend the writer for a well edited book.
I rate this book as 4 out of 4 because I was impressed by the vivid narration of the author. The story was well paced and inspiring at the same. I also liked the idealistic approach if the author all through the memoir.
I would like to recommend this book to people who enjoy reading historical non fictions and memoirs. I also think young people would be a great audience for this book.
