Surviving the “Business” of Healthcare by Barbara Galutia Regis, M.S., PA-C is a book written to address the healthcare situation in the United States and offers advice to readers on how to afford the best healthcare. The author starts by giving her personal experience of being diagnosed with amelanotic melanoma, a form of skin cancer. She details how she received the news, her options, and how she navigated through utilizing all the support she could get. Barbara Galutia is a Physician Assistant, having worked in healthcare since 1997. She shares the various developments healthcare has experienced from her childhood as her father was a doctor. She also discusses the importance of having a Physician Assistance to enable you to make wise medical decisions.

The book thoroughly analyses the cost of healthcare in the United States. It examines the effectiveness of the Affordable Care Act of 2010 and why many people still cannot afford health insurance. It touches on how receiving healthcare is inflated and the exploitation perpetrated by pharmacies and drug companies. The author also discusses the ‘opioid epidemic’ and how facilities nowadays are torn between patient satisfaction and providing the best care. The book also explains the options available in the medical field, explaining the various professions available and the academic requirements.

There were so many things I loved about this book. First, I learned that acting promptly and seeking the best advice while seeking treatment sets you on the best foot. I could think of the many mistakes we make every time we search for hospital care and waste time and resources. All that can be avoided after reading this book. Secondly, the author provided case scenarios to pass her points. This made me agree with her line of thinking while reading through the book. In addition, she gives some of the solutions to the problems in healthcare in the United States. In her letter to Congress, she suggested how families without health insurance can afford cover through government direction. Lastly, the author has organized her lessons in brief chapters supported with adequate data. It was easy for me to read and transition from one idea to another. I liked many things about this book; I cannot exhaust them here. There was nothing to dislike about the book.

The author has put great effort into writing this book. Her observations are genuine and necessary based on the issues she addresses in the book. She has done a lot of research and explored most of the options in financing healthcare in the United States. Her advice to patients, healthcare providers, and people aspiring to join the field is apt and applicable. In addition, I could not find any single error in the book. It was exceptionally well-edited. That being said, I am happy to give the book a deserving rating of 4 out of 4 stars.

I recommend this book to people seeking financial advice on which insurance covers to buy. The author has given various options and tips on acquiring the best plans without being exploited. I also recommend this book to people who want to pursue a career in any healthcare course. The author’s personal experience and her description of other professionals in the field are of immense help. However, I strongly feel every person, especially a citizen of the United States, should read this book. There is a lot to learn from it.
