Review of Why Can't Johnny Just Quit?
Drugs are known to treat diseases, and improve quality of our health. However, that may not be the case in some instances. In Why Can’t Johnny Just Quit? , Kyle Oh, M.D provides details on why use of drugs may sometimes lead to addiction, and make life even more difficult for those who seek medical attention. In the book, Kyle gives examples of cases, where people have used drugs prescribed by a doctor, only to end up as drug addicts. One of such cases is that of May, who eventually realizes that her doctor has betrayed her because he keeps giving her pain medication, which eventually leads to her drug addiction.
First, I like the idea that drug addiction is not necessarily about people who cannot stop using drugs, but something taking place in the brain that is no easily contained. In the society, drug addicts are often blamed for not taking control of their lives, forgetting that some addictions are attributed to poor prescription by health experts themselves. Again, there is a missing information that this book has adequately provided, which is about the role health experts have in making people addicted to drugs they prescribe to them.
Honestly, there is nothing wrong, or negative in this book. This is the kind of a book, which I believe everyone should read, because it enhances knowledge about addiction in the society. However, there are some editing errors, which in my view are the only negative things I have noted in this book.
I rate this book 4 out of 4. The book is relevant, and it can help in understanding addiction, which is one of the problems many people struggle with. I like how the author has gone to the extent of discussing the brain and how pleasure part of the bran can be rewired to desire more drugs, leading to addiction. The book is also easy to read because the author uses sub-headings, which make the details in each section clearer. Even though I have noted some editing mistakes, they are very minor and cannot reduce the rating of this book, which has the quality of information the society requires.
I recommend this book to healthcare professionals and families of drug addicts. To healthcare professionals, this book offers understanding that drugs prescribed to patients may lead to addiction. To families of drug addicts, this book offers adequate information about why some people fail to stop using drugs, which should not be blamed on them. I have really enjoyed this book, and I believe that by reading it, you will learn something about drug addiction and why it is not easy for the addicts to quit.
