Review of A Dream For Peace
Years ago, struggles for independence swept across Africa due to the longstanding evils of racism, exploitation, and arbitrary violence that tagged along with colonialism. This remarkable story will enlighten you about different African visionaries and their unyielding fights for political consciousness and independence. A Dream For Peace by Ghoulem Berrah is an inspirational autobiography of a passionate political activist, scientist, diplomat, and freedom fighter, who found great purpose in serving Africa and advocating for lasting reconciliation in the continent.
Ghoulem was not only an integral part of the Algerian and Moroccan liberation struggles, but he was also well versed in the scientific world by becoming the first person to give a hypothesis about ‘Reverse Transcriptase Enzyme.’ He further describes his experiences working as a special advisor to the first president of Côte d’Ivoire and writes about his unique spiritual journey and love life. Wouldn’t it be fascinating to learn about the vigorous activism of a very brilliant man and critical historical events in Africa? I urge you to find out in this phenomenal book!
This book has countless positive aspects. It is a richly detailed and thought-provoking book about imperialism and colonialism in some African countries and the decolonization and liberation movements in Algeria. I find the author’s writing skills impressive and the pictures that accompanied his storytelling illuminating. The author gave insights into the conflict in the Middle East, Ghana’s independence, South Africa’s Apartheid, Nigeria’s civil war, and the achievements and virtues of president Felix Houphouët Boigny.
What I loved about this book was the author’s recognition of many great men; for instance, I got to know a little about one of the greatest military strategists of the 20th century. It will also enlighten you about the historical connections of different leaders. This is an essential book deserving the widest possible readership. Despite the many pages of this book, I only discovered a few errors. The sentences were clear and coherent, and the professional editing refined this book to its essential excellence.
Also, this book celebrates the richness of different faiths and preaches interfaith dialogues and unity. I was deeply immersed in the ‘Our Common Faith’ chapter because it provided information about biblical sites, the core beliefs and practices of Islam, and significant spiritual messages. The exceptional leadership qualities of President Houphouët and the author's efforts in fostering African identity and culture are all worthy of emulation. I also enjoyed the author’s love declaration and affection for his beautiful Ivorian ‘love’, Titi. This was a very enjoyable voluminous book.
I noticed only one negative aspect of this book. The story progressed seamlessly and had important historical milestones; however, in the last few chapters, I did not see the need for some details. Safe to conclude that those details were irrelevant. Notwithstanding, this is a captivating memoir and a fantastic read that would inspire positive change and teach about the political dynamics in Africa. I do not hesitate to rate this book four out of four stars for these reasons. I recommend this book to anyone who loves autobiographies and historical events surrounding Africa’s independence.
