Review of A Dream For Peace
Dr. Ghoulem Berrah was born into a humble yet strong and proud family. He begins by painting us a vivid picture of what Algeria looked like when he was a young boy. He describes his childhood in detail. As he progressed through school, he noticed how little his people knew about Algeria and the injustices they faced. His first act against racism and colonialism landed him severe punishment. But this did not deter him. He continued to work hard on his studies which earned him a scholarship. He chose to study in France, where his enthusiasm and zeal toward the fight for liberation intensified.
His higher education pursuit bore him fruits as he rose the ranks to become a scientist and lecturer at Yale. But the good life of America did not grip his heart the way he wanted. He, therefore, decided to go back home, where his diplomatic career soared to new heights. A Dream For Peace by the late Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is an account of a life well-lived. A life story that educates and entertains. I hope that you will obtain a copy and enjoy it just as much as I have, or even more.
The first thing to note from this book is how long it is. However, I appreciate the simple and easy-to-understand English used. The use of footnotes to expound on unfamiliar terms is refreshing. I like Dr. Ghoulem's storytelling. It has a good, natural flow, and it captures your attention effortlessly. Pictures of prominent people and relevant documents help to enrich the story. I like how he went the extra mile to credit the sources from which he got the photographs.
There is an element of suspense and humor in the story as well. Dr. Ghoulem's unwavering faith in the Almighty and his views on spirituality are fascinating. I love how he relentlessly pursued peace even when it looked hopeless. His selflessness, compassion, drive, and faith are worth emulating. My favorite part of the book is the detailed description of his pilgrimages to Mecca and Jerusalem. Finally, his humility stands out. Even after accomplishing so much, he remained humble. For instance, when, on one occasion, he points out that he does not think he deserves all of his medals. Instead, he wears them because others think he deserves them. What a man!
I am glad to say the editorial team did a good job. I only noticed three errors in the book, but they did not hinder my appreciation for it. There is no profanity or erotic content in the book. I recommend this memoir to lovers of political history, especially in Africa, stories revolving around diplomacy and good life stories.
Having been a lengthy read, I am glad I enjoyed it. I rate A Dream For Peace 4 out of 4 stars for entertaining, teaching, and inspiring me.
