Review of Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks
Consider how lucky you'd be if you happened to catch a knowledgeable doctor at a party. If he was in a chatty mood, what questions would you ask him? What brief but pleasing light may he shed on prevalent myths and misunderstandings that perplex the vast majority of us in our everyday pursuit of busy lives and relatively fit and healthy bodies?
Health Tips, Myths and Tricks: A Physician Advice, by Morton E. Tavel, MD, is a faithful imitation of a conversation you may have with a laid-back and chatty doctor who has a lot to say after a long and committed career.
The book is divided into three pieces. The first section of the book, "Tips," is devoted to health articles and has little original content. It's functional, but it's not really eye-catching. The fun begins in the second section, "Myths." Who hasn't raised an eyebrow in disbelief at the growth of organic goods, water options, probiotics, and gluten-free items? Tavel's selection of topics is thoughtful, and the knowledge appears to be useful. The final section, "Tricks," is also an essential and fascinating examination of the plethora of images that have flooded the health environment.
The emphasis is on health, but it also teaches you how to save money and avoid falling for old wives tales. It even explains how the truth was discovered and where he got his knowledge. Even if something appears to offer a lot of health benefits, there are still hazards to be aware of. These dangers change depending on gender and even age.
Coffee and Health: Good, Bad, or Indifferent? was my favorite chapter in this book. I'm a big coffee drinker! Some doctors will advise me to avoid coffee, while others will suggest that it is OK in moderation. Each health advantage and risk were explained in the information I read. I was also intrigued by the fact that chocolate has components that appear to help decrease blood pressure and improve cardiovascular health. It can also help with brain function, though there are other aspects to consider, as you will discover as you read this book.
All Overall, there is a great deal of information to evaluate, but the research has already been completed for you. In most cases, you'll be able to make an informed decision about whether or not to eat and/or purchase particular items. It's a lengthy read, but it's well worth it. This book is written in a clear and precise manner. The book is well-edited and nearly error-free.
I give this book a 3 out of 4 star rating because the core theory is sound, and I believe it will be valuable to many readers in a limited sense. It has multiple chapters that are completely unrelated to the topic at hand.
