Review of Why Can't Johnny Just Quit?
"The more there is written about something, the less we really understand it." This is the first quote in the book why can't Johnny just quit? Kyle Oh MD has specialized in rehabilitation and physical medicine. He started as a pain specialist, but after an incident that led him to look into addiction, he became an addiction specialist. His book discusses addiction and goes ahead to look into the prevention of addiction. He discusses addiction's misconceptions, explains what addiction is, and gives examples and scenarios he has dealt with through his patients. His book is intended to make people understand addiction, help those already affected get it under control, and by helping in redefining addiction and helping people better understand it, prevent others from getting addicted, to begin with.
I picked this book because I like learning new ideas, especially those that challenge existing knowledge. This book most certainly did not disappoint. I didn't know much about addiction except from the shows and books I've read depicting the issue. I can say, though, I am able to look at the subject in an entirely different light after reading the book. Even though his focus seems to be on opiate pills addiction, he touches on alcoholism and other types of addiction. He includes facts, references, and links for those interested in more information.
The book has 17 chapters, and the writing, though including some medical terminology, was simple. The writer tries to simplify everything so that the general public can understand it. I liked how he included actual cases he has dealt with. It was easy to follow through, and the editing was great, having no grammatical errors.
There were instances of repletion though the writer does include a note saying that it was necessary to make sure people understood. Other than that, I found nothing negative about the subject. Even though it was published in 2014, thus its research may not be current; I find it still relevant today, especially as addiction keeps growing and having one of its aims to prevent addiction, it's worth the shot.
I, therefore, rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. We have plenty of books discussing addiction, but few look into its prevention. The writer looks at addiction through a different lens. Most people look at those who get addicted as people who chose their path; he hopes to show you that there's more to addiction than the misconceptions, and addiction has to do more with how people react to different drugs and their susceptibility. I recommend this book to those struggling with addiction and everyone at large because awareness and understanding of addiction may go a long way into preventing it either for you or a loved one.
