Dr Morton E. Tavel, MD, is a retired physician specializing in cardiology and internal medicine. He has a lot of practice in the field and has even instructed medical trainees. He has delved into research with over 100 publications. Having read a couple of lifestyle and health books, Dr Tavel's book was refreshing. Health tips, myths and tricks is a book meant to give its readers guidelines on healthy living show them red flags they need to look out for to avoid being scammed by advertisement campaigns into buying what he calls "snake oils". He also talks about the popular myths that have been adopted by people and point out everything he states through references backed by scientific research.

The book is divided into several chapters. He has separated all chapters into three categories. That is tips, myths and tricks, just like the title. It doesn't dig too deep into anything as the chapters are short and he keeps his work simple therefore easily understood by everyone. It's not common to find a book discussing health that will have you not looking for a dictionary, so it was a relatively easy read.

I liked how the writer organized every chapter. In places where he wrote something related to another existing chapter, he would point out the chapter enabling you to read it next if you'd prefer that. It's a book I would keep around as a guide now and then. He makes it enjoyable to read by adding bits of humour, which makes it a memorable read.

The only thing I didn't like was that the references and research used are limited to research that was from the year 2002 or so having read some recent health books, I feel like the book is limited to research that was carried out then and some recent research may add or subtract from his points. This, however, doesn't make the book any less worth it as it educates on a lot more that's not limited to the timeframe.

I rate his book 4 out of 4 stars. It's taken a complex subject and simplified it for the average reader. It is professionally edited as I found no grammatical errors. I recommend this book to everyone as we could all use a physician's take and guidelines on healthy living, especially now that everyone seems to have a say on what is right or wrong in sensitive topics like weight loss. You can use the book to filter out content and choose what works best.
