Why Can’t Johnny Just Quit? , a book by Kyle Oh, M.D, explains why people are always addicted to drugs, and why it is not easy for them to quit. The book gives different reasons why the body of an individual would be addicted to drugs, prescription medicine, and what make individuals prone to drug addiction. The pleasure spot in the brain, can be rewired and this would lead to the brain triggering desires for more drugs. The author concludes that, addiction should be qualified as a disease, because the brain changes, forcing a person to depend largely on drugs, something that is not easily contained.

I like one crucial aspect of the book, which is how it helps in giving understanding about those who are addicted to drugs. In most cases, people tend to think that those who are addicted to drugs are pretending, and that addiction is nothing serious. This books makes it clear that addiction has got more to do with our brains, which when gets used to drugs, it becomes very hard to control. I also like the explanation on how the body responds to drugs, to the point that it likes and always want to use certain drugs.

There is nothing negative about this book. This is the kind of a book, which I would like everyone to read so as to ensure that the issue of addiction is fully understood, and solutions found. In fact, I like the fact that the author has used sub-headings, and clear language to make the reader understand why drug users cannot quit. The words used are also simple, again, making it easy to understand every concept mentioned by the author.

I give this book 4 out of 4 stars . First, the book helps the reader to understand that drug addiction is a serious issue, which should not be taken lightly as many may think. When one is addicted, he, or she lacks the power to get out of addiction by himself, or herself, because the brain is already positioned to accept even more drugs. I also like the fact that the book is professionally edited, and I could only spot one or two errors in the entire book, which cannot change this rating.

I would recommend this book to health experts, who deal with the drug addicts. This book emphasizes on the importance of understanding the addicts, and helping them, to save their lives. Doctors, and counselors can all use this book to understand the steps they should take in helping the drug addicts.
