The Low-Carbon Cookbook & Action Plan: Reduce Food Waste and Combat Climate Change with 140 Sustainable Plant-Based Recipes by Alejandra Schrader is a nonfiction book with a very self-explanatory title. The author describes not only plant-based nourishing recipes, but she also introduces readers to the food and climate crisis. This is Schrader’s debut book. She is trying to educate us about food consumption and how we buy groceries. It is a beautifully packaged cookbook with research data, knowledge about our carbon footprint, and straightforward recipes.

This cookbook stands out in a very saturated market. However, I know that some readers will dislike this book, for all the reasons I enjoyed it. If you are a climate change naysayer or are not interested in the environmental impact of various foods, then you will not enjoy this book. I am aware of the critique regarding availability and the cost of healthy food. Nonetheless, I found all recipes easy to follow and quick to make. Who knew so many innovative ways to make a salad? I loved the breakfast section because that is something I want to improve in my eating habits.

It is also hard not to talk about food waste issues when a substantial part of our planet is starving. Consequently, my favorite part of this book is the entire chapter four, where the author addresses tips to shop wisely and how to reduce food waste. Food is remarkably suggestive, bringing back memories. I liked how the author incorporated her Venezuelan roots into her recipes. There are quick tips at the end of each recipe, which I find extremely helpful.

My only issue with this book is that I don’t own a physical copy. There was only one minor error, and the editing was exceptional. Furthermore, I found nothing to dislike about this book. Therefore, I have to rate it with a perfect score of four out of four stars.

If you are interested in a vegan, plant-oriented diet and learning about the correlation between food and climate change, this is a great way to inform yourself. I would recommend the paperback version of this book, as it is easy to navigate and enjoy the beautiful layout and photographs of the book. I think that both beginners, those who are vegans already or people curious about other diets, will benefit from reading this book. It might inspire you to try new food, but it will also teach you about our planet.
