Review of A Dream For Peace
A Dream For Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is a non-fiction book that presents the social background and the accomplishments in different countries during the diplomatic career of the author. It offers a glimpse of the history of Africa and the dream of Dr. Berrah: the independence of Algeria. Also, this memoir highlights various themes such as spirituality, religious diversity, global politics, family, and love.
Briefly, the author shared his spiritual journey, especially his relationships with different personalities and dear ones, his struggles in political activism, and his moral principles. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah, a remarkable scientist and activist, is a Muslim born in Algeria who envisioned a world with full cooperation between nations. He focused on his education, alternating between medical studies and political activities. Dr. Berrah rejected the French colonialists and had a right cause: the freedom of his motherland.
I liked that besides his impressive career and distinctions, the author also presented his love story highlighting the respect between husband and wife and the harmony of a happy family. I loved the connection and affection between him and the love of his life, Titi. Their mutual love and devotion remained the same for 40 years. Also, I liked that the author and his wife lived according to their convictions and faith in one unique God. For example, they did not try to convert to the religion of the other, celebrated both Muslim and Christian holidays, and went on pilgrimages together.
There is nothing I disliked about this memoir. I enjoyed reading about the experiences of Dr. Berrah, his ideology, and his efforts while risking his life for his mission and witnessing substantial changes in the economic development of Africa. I appreciated his objective for peace and his commitment to his mission to solidify the relationships between Algeria and Côte d'Ivoire. I loved the synergy between him and Houphouët-Boigny, the President of Côte d'Ivoire, their mutual respect and true friendship. Also, I was impressed by how he expressed his revulsion against racism. For instance, his teacher did not want to make skin contact with him at the graduation ceremony. He felt hurt and dropped the award in protest, and I empathized with him.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it transcends ethnic and religious boundaries. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah put his heart into it and offered a valuable lesson for humankind to stand up for other people and always be fair. I learned the importance of the call to action and open dialogue in the development of nations. The dream for peace starts with us. Also, the memoir was professionally edited. I only discovered three minor errors.
I would recommend this book to those who like profound meanings and stories about friendship and religiosity. It is suitable for a large audience because Dr. Ghoulen Berrah did not use profane language and erotic references. A Dream For Peace is perfect for people who want to read about different political beliefs and ideologies, injustice, and social equality but not for those who are not interested in topics like racism, war, capitalism, or socialism.
