Review of Scandal, Heartbreak and Deceit: One Woman's Experience with Online Dating
Scandal, Heartbreak and Deceit: One Woman's Experience with Online Dating is a non-fiction story featuring the author Elizabeth Mahoney, who narrates this mind-blowing tale. When she gains knowledge of her husband's numerous affairs, he asks her for an open marriage in a bid to keep emotionally manipulating her. Elizabeth, however, divorces him and shortly joins Match.com to find a potential partner. She quickly realizes that the site is full of sleazy men who are con artists, perverts, or married men looking for affairs.
One match takes emotional advantage of her as he claims to be in several financial fixes and cons Elizabeth of her hard-earned man. The con artist has a lot of experience manipulating victims as it appears this is not his first gig. He gains her trust and uses personal experiences that relate to the victim. After luring her in, he begins asking for financial favors claiming to repay them soon. Unfortunately, it is too late before the author realizes that she is being taken advantage of. She includes numerous encounters of other women who have fallen prey to romantic online scams.
The book is enlightening and fascinating as all the email correspondences between the different parties have been included. Also, I found this book to be empowering because victims of scams are often too afraid to speak up in fear of being perceived as naïve and dumb. It brings awareness that online dating sites are exploiting their clients. Having never joined an online dating site before, I was thoroughly discouraged from joining one after reading this book. The book has a very personal touch to it, and it is easy to emphasize with these women who lost everything.
I didn't particularly appreciate that I found some parts of this book repetitious especially the first part. All data that everyone can find on the internet has been included, and it felt unnecessary. Also, the flow seemed a bit forced. The author would talk about her characters in a back-and-forth manner. This woman had a powerful story to tell, and I am glad she got it out there. It is a fascinating book that is exceptionally edited. I found zero mistakes.
I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. With the current trends of meeting people online, I feel like this book is a powerful tool to educate those interested in following such a path. I recommend it to an adult audience.
