Review of A Dream For Peace
If you had a life as a successful ambassador, you would presumably be seen as accomplished. It would be no different if you were a brilliant, revolutionary and pioneering scientist. If you were, better yet, a revered and celebrated advocate for global peace and freedom, you would also be held in high regard. Now imagine if you were all of those things all at once.
In A Dream for Peace, author Dr. Ghoulem Berrah chronicles his multifaceted life story. He is an born and raised in Algeria. Over his life and the course of the book, he is a son, husband, father, revolutionary, scientist and the ambassador and advisor to the former long-serving Ivory Coast President Felix Houphoeut-Boigny. The book is a testament to the power of human will and a kindred spirit in a world strife with conflict, religious intolerance, discrimination and hate.
The book is brilliant and enlightening. The author chronicles the events in the book in such a manner that the reader can always keep pace and at no one time does the story feel disjointed. The reader is able to note and marvel at the growth and transformation the author undergoes each step of the way. I loved the author's immaculate handling of delicate and often contentious themes such as discrimination and particularly racism. His approach towards these topics is impartial and utterly objective despite that he was a victim of the injustices himself. This makes for a honest and authentic story.
I loved the author's obvious emphasis on the need for peace and harmony in the society. Given the suffering he and fellow Africans were subjected to due to colonialism, one would be forgiven to resort to retaliatory actions to mitigate these wrongdoings. The author is instead advocating for peace regardless. I found this endearing. The book is also hugely inspirational. Despite his humble background, the author goes on to achieve incredible feats. This is proof that we all possess within us, the power to be great. The book is written in simple language devoid of jargon which makes the reading process less tedious.
The book is well-written and professionally edited. I did not find anything negative in it. I would therefore give it a rating of four out of four.
There is a common saying that the only thing that can outlive a man is his legacy. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah's legacy will surely outlive him. I would highly recommend this book to historians of African politics and all believers of the need for world peace.
