Review of Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks
I selected that book out of curiosity. I wanted to see how crazy the world of misinformation is, mainly to have a private chuckle here and there. I am so glad I did choose it. Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks is a valuable book to have on your bookshelf to refer to when needed. With 62 chapters on different topics, you can imagine how thorough the coverage is. The title reflects the three sections into which the book is divided, namely tips, myths, and tricks to make life easier, save money and result in a healthier you. The first chapter deals with weight and all the facts around it. I soon realized that I would have to find laughing matters somewhere else. This book is written in a serious and well-researched way and gives logical explanations why people are overweight and why the situation aggravates. Throughout the book, nutritional facts are given based on the results of tests done over long periods. Some of the findings are totally in contrast with what we thought we knew. The fact that brown rice has the highest level of arsenic content of all kinds of rice, came as a shock. Despite the high nutrient content of brown rice, it is harder to digest. It is thus not the healthiest choice at all. Likewise, many things about nutrition get exposed. The biggest eye-opener comes in Chapter 21, named “Dietary Supplements: Some Good, Some Useless, and Some Dangerous”
What I liked about Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks is the conclusion at the end of each chapter where the author helps you put the given information into perspective. Morton E. Tavel gives alternatives to food that is undesirable for specific conditions. I also appreciated that he puts everyday foods that we eat into the right perspective, for example, Chapter 23 deals with Why junk food is double trouble. Having read this chapter you might not enjoy your next hamburger that much. Information is given about everyday activities such as sleep, exercise, and the use of sunscreen. This book is a must-have on your shelf because you will want to refer to it again and again. The author reveals several medical scams towards the end of the book. I found this highly admirable because it puts him at risk.
I could not find one thing in this book that I disliked. It was a pleasant read and as educational as anyone could wish for. As I was reading, I had to control myself not to phone my children to tell them all the information I came across. The editing was not entirely without errors though.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because of the valuable information it gives to the reader and also because of how easy it is to read.
I would recommend this book to all mothers, teenagers worried about their health and bodies, pharmacists, and health care workers. Older people might also find the information beneficial. All people who want to promote their health and take responsibility for their well being would benefit from reading this book. Physicians may find it interesting and beneficial as well.
