Review of Chasing A Flawed Sun
"Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start now and make a brand new ending." Carl Bard. Chasing A Flawed Sun is a true drug addiction recovery story by Daniel McGhee.
Daniel takes us through his eighteen years of drug addiction recovery. He tells us what drove him into drugs. He didn't like his fragile nature, shyness, family status, and being tinny. Additionally, he dreamt of being a drug dealer, gangbanger, and loved pop culture. He narrates how he survived in the streets, how he got drugs, how he served in correctional units, visits to rehabilitation centers, and finally, recovery.
I liked how the author incorporated the verses, quotes on drug addiction at the start of every season. He employed the aspect of a story in another story, which was so intriguing. In this case, the story of Adam and the snake. This revealed the battle he was having with himself.
Undoubtedly, he was able to touch every aspect of his struggle for recovery. The effects of heroin included; the inability to urinate, emotional and physical pain, removal of all care, and anxiety for the future. Regret and embarrassment were also evident when he went back into drugs. living a lie, stealing, and hurting others to get drugs.
The author used his wit to trigger my emotions by, allowing me to feel as though I was experiencing what he was feeling. I felt sad every time he went back to drugs, just when I thought he was out of them for good. I felt happy and impressed when he made an inch closer to discovery. He mastered the art of narrating. I experienced a profound and exciting need to continue further in the story. This is evident when he used terms like, 'my job in the jail was magically safe, but not for long.' The last part made me want to know more.
The parts I loved most were, The Temazcal and The New Testament. He described the relation associated the intensity of heat from the fire in the Temazcal, with the drugs which were consuming him internally. In the New Testament, he was able to reveal that, heroin was The Flawed Sun. It consumed him every time he got closer. In the same part, he was able to motivate other addicts. I found this part very helpful.
I assume this book was professionally edited. This is on the account that I didn't find any errors. The author did an exceptional job.
I give Chasing A Flawed Sun a well-deserved rating of 4 out of 4 stars. A very elaborate narration of a struggling addict. The awareness of our ability to fall is our humility and the awareness of the rope that we walk is our gratitude. Focusing is a major key to recovery. I recommend this book to any addict out there struggling and on the verge of giving up after several trials.
