Of late Bitcoin has been in news often. But, what made Bill Gates call it a techno tour de force? A few days ago, The Indian Express explained how Bitcoin is as much a political movement, as a technological one. But first, what exactly is Bitcoin? Jon Law and John Alan address this question in their latest book, The Bitcoin Answered - a beginner's book to understand Bitcoin. The book touches upon various aspects of the same - Blockchain technology, comparison of Bitcoin with other cryptocurrencies, and mining. The authors have also incorporated visuals, a glossary, and additional resources. All together they help the readers to comprehend the system of Bitcoin.

Bitcoin is a digital currency that operates without a single administrator. A chunk of the book discusses whether one should invest in Bitcoin or not. Readers will naturally be curious about the same. People give different answers to this question. These answers are usually based on the momentary rise and fall of Bitcoin. On the other hand, the answer in the book is independent of the volatility of Bitcoin. I like the authors' perspective. It is unbiased and practical.

Bitcoin as a topic is quite vast and complex, so there is always a risk of losing the reader's interest. But the authors has dealt with this issue in a simple and elegant manner. The book is written in a question-answer format to break the monotony and simplify the content. Additionally, the tone of the book is light. The authors have incorporated some fun content. For example, one chapter introduces the slangs used in the Bitcoin world. Another chapter, which also happens to be my favorite, discusses the various controversies surrounding Bitcoin. The question-answer format and some interesting chapters together make the book more engaging.

I did not find anything in the book that I disliked. Though, being from a computer background - I became curious and wanted to understand blockchain technology in depth. Information about digital signatures and hash functions is not included in the book, so I referred to other resources. I emphasize that one does not need to understand these details to use Bitcoin. Like one does not need to understand the working of a bank to use a credit card.

I will give the book 4 out of 4 stars. I did not find grammatical errors in my reading experience and so believe that the book is edited professionally. Moreover, I feel the book has successfully given an overview of bitcoin. I will recommend it to people who have no prior knowledge of Bitcoin. Though, they should know some basics of economics to follow through with the book.
