Who Told You That You Were Naked by William Combs is a spiritual book that focuses mainly on the fall of man from grace, as contained in the book of Genesis. Just as the book title suggests, it is a thorough re-examination of the biblical account of Adam and Eve contained in the Old Testament and its lasting effects.

William Combs delves into this account while embellishing his exposition with testimonies and an imaginary perceptive. Through the appraisal of the fall of man, he touches all the critical areas of our journey as Christians. Faith, sin, worry, humility, and redemption are all redefined in ways I never imagined before. The book encourages us to view these Christian principles from a different perspective instead of our usual human perception. This improves our understanding of God, his word, our purpose, and our identity as children of God.

The positive aspects of this book were many. I appreciate the author's effort to make sure we understand all we need to about the expedition he takes us on. This effort is evident in the creative fictional stories he spins to fill the lacuna that may exist, the expansion of some of the biblical stories, and the Hebrew and Greek explanations he offered from time to time. He breaks down the seemingly complex parts and lays them bare for the readers. He brings out subtle points that we might pay no heed to and brings out the connotative meaning of “plain” words of the scriptures.

Furthermore, the study questions at the end of each chapter make the reader ponder on the chapter, search for answers and arrive at the same while being guided by bible passages. The author’s tone is not imposing in any way but instead invites you to think deeply and realize the answers you seek yourself. Even though it seems the Old Testament is the author’s focal point, I love the way he cross-referenced with the New Testament, all in an attempt to give a detailed appraisal.

I found a few minor grammatical errors in this book. However, It was professionally edited. I could not find any negative aspects to this book. It is an indispensable companion to everyone seeking a better spiritual life or journey. Without any hesitation, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because of the reasons above. I firmly believe this rating befits the book. I recommend this book to persons seeking to understand God’s word more, persons struggling in their spiritual journey, or persons seeking to improve it.

The full consequences of the fall of man has never really been thoroughly discussed. Nice to find a book that discusses it.
