Review of Idiom Attack Vol. 1 Everyday Living (German Edition)
Idiom Attack Vol. 1: Everyday Living (German edition) is a collaborative effort by language acquisition writer Peter N. Liptak, Matthew Douma who is an author of English educational material, and story writer Jay Douma. The translation was done by Angela Boston, who has completed a Master of Education in German literature, linguistics, and history.
The edition is geared toward German speakers who already have some English knowledge but could use some help with idiomatic expressions that are commonly used in everyday situations and in writing. The book is structured into 25 themed chapters that go through 300 idioms. Themes include weather conditions, phone conversations, shopping, illness, relationships, and more.
The idiomatic expressions are conveniently placed within German sentences, there are translations and explanations, as well as drawings to aid visual learners. Chapters conclude with exercises so learners can put into use the material they have learned.
As a reader who is fluent in English and has studied German years ago, the way I used to book was reversed. I used it to get re-acquainted with German all over again. It was a fun challenge for me, especially since I used to enjoy studying idioms back when I was learning both German and English. I had a great experience with this book as a fun project. It's not the ideal way to brush up on a language one hasn't touched in years but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
I would recommend the book to German speakers who are looking to learn American English idioms. Having the exercises at the end of every chapter is extremely useful and no teaching material should ever skip them, in my opinion. Of course, if you're not interested in language learning then I don't recommend the book.
If you wish to try what I did, go for it. It takes longer to go through everything but the result is there.
There was nothing about the book that I disliked.
I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. I enjoyed the experience and didn't notice any errors. I think it's a great study material that would benefit learners of the English language. Idioms are everywhere and sometimes foreign speakers can work out the meaning through the context of the sentence but often that isn't possible or as easy to do for some people. Using dedicated textbooks like this one is a must considering how often you will be reading and hearing idioms.
