Review of Beneath the Muscle
What’s an impressive story! I expected this would be a research work due to its category, non-fiction, and I hoped to learn something about fitness techniques or nutrition tips through the title Beneath the muscle. Then my experience after reading this book is totally different from what I predicted. The author has driven me from this point to that point so smoothly which makes me say wow so many times. It sounds quite perfect, though it also has some drawbacks according to my opinion to be better.
Lauren Powers, the author, must be the spotlight in her own book because it was written on her true story. From the beginning, there are a lot of “big” people such as event promoters, professional bodybuilders, top celebrity personal trainers, world champion fitness models…etc. It shows that the author gets popularity and strong respect among her colleagues. It would be nonsense or tend to show off if it did not have something worth being like that. Honestly, I 100% admire this person for her journey which not many people in this world can do. The layout of her book is so clever that it creates a new approach telling reachers that it is going to be an exciting book and I cannot do anything but enjoy it.
Besides good content, what I like most is the lively images she has used throughout her work. “Juiciest peach on the tree, and run into somewhere doesn’t like peaches”, “square peg in a world of round holes” are two of my most favorite metaphors in this book. Different from some books on the same topic, this book gives me an abundance of things to think carefully before continuing to read it. Non-fiction books usually bring logical information like if we want to have a sashimi dish, we must have the fish first. But this one doesn’t function in that way, it carries a lot of lessons inside the story that the author doesn’t need to point out. Because that is the duty of the audiences.
On the other hand, although I gonna vote maximum point for this book, I still want to contribute to making it more perfect. There are 17 chapters formed logically in order to build a logical and unique book that stands out from the others but it doesn’t need writing quite long. For example, in parts 1 and 2, she has put more effort to build these fields where she tells us about who she is, what she did, and how she handled her youth. I wish that she could have shortened it and gone to the point faster.
I rate this book 4 out of 4. There are several reasons making me do this, such as it has successfully done its function as an inspiring work; it contains a variety of lively metaphors. Despite the minor defect related to my personal idea, this book is still a masterpiece.
I highly recommend this book for everyone who is seeking the motivation to build their own world like high school students, college students,... Especially, parents and teachers are 2 subjects I think of immediately because this book includes so many real-life examples that can help them guide their children at both home and school.
