I had always believed that you could be whoever you wanted to be, do whatever you wanted to do par time, and break any bad habit or addictions you wanted to break by mere willpower, if only you really wanted to. Not until I developed an unproductive habit that I struggled with for too long, did I realize that it was not that easy. I realized it takes time, sometimes help from others, and most importantly, God's grace to get rid of some habits for good.

Especially among the teenage age group, there has been an increase in the use of drugs. Some drug addicts can trace the origin of their addiction to the perception that drugs would help ease the headaches and stresses of life. Some started doing drugs because it was the 'cool' thing to do as suggested by their peers and because they wanted to look tough and feel accepted among their peers. It was the latter for Daniel McGhee, the author of this book.

Chasing a Flawed Sun lets readers on about the life of a heroine lover and drug addict. It recounts Daniel's life as a drug addict and the vicissitudes he encountered as he journeyed towards freedom from drugs and clean life. His addiction took him in and out of prisons, rehabilitation centers, etc. A couple of times, he would come close to breaking free, only to relapse back into the habit. It was a depressing journey that cost him his integrity and life for a while. A time came when Daniel recognized that he was indeed blessed to have been given the many chances he had received and finally took one last decision to stay drug-free forever.

The real heroes of this book, in my opinion, are Daniel's parents. While reading the book, my heart broke at how a morally and otherwise decent couple watched their son become a drug addict and a threat to society. Amidst Daniel's struggle with drugs, they never pushed him away or disowned him, but over the years, they constantly sought ways to help him break free from his addiction. It is sad to admit that like this case, some ills in our society cannot be traced to homes. A child can be properly trained by morally upright parents and still get corrupted. As a Christian, the only solution I see to this is to always commit your children to prayers, that they may always stay in the ways of the Lord.

What I appreciate most about this book is that Daniel did not just share an autobiography of himself, he also shared useful tips that one can apply to break free from any bad habit. I appreciate the author's honesty and openness on his vulnerable times. I could feel that his mission and purpose for producing the book was to help a soul who is currently struggling as he was.

I did not see anything whatsoever to dislike about the book. Chasing A Flawed Sun is a well-written, perfectly well-edited, and super inspiring book that carries an educative message that is very relevant to our present world. Based on these, I give the book a rating of four out of four stars. I think there is a message in this book for everybody on the surface of this earth, so I recommend the book to everybody. Particularly, anyone trying to break free from any form of addiction will find many useful tips in this book that could help.
